Are masks interchangeable with machines?

Post by dinycat » Sun Jan 26, 2014 9:01 pm

I'm having trouble with the Res Med Quattro Mirage mask. My daughter gave me her (hardly used) Swift FX for Her.

How can I attach it to my PR unit? Or is it even possible?

Thanks.

Masks are interchangeable with all machines. What is the "PR" unit you are referring to?

Harley, it's Philips Respironics

I can't figure out how to attach the Swift FX for Her to my Philips One Remstar machine.

I take it the hose attachment points are different sizes then, Diny, as that is the only place attachment is made, There are adapters that are available but in a pinch if the CPAP hose is too big for the interface tubing I've wrapped a bit of electrical tape around the interface tubing to get the proper fit.

Look closely at the end of the long hose to make sure that a little adapter or piece of plastic didn't get stuck in the hose (would have come off your other mask).
The Swift FX will fit directly into the long hose without any attachments or adapters needed.

Often little adapters from various FFmasks come off and get stuck in the long hose...some are really stuck but there shouldn't be anything in the long hose at the rubber/coupling end.

Thanks, Harley and Pugsy

I think I'm going to have to get professional help. They've set my pressure at 8, which is for the full face mask. When I try this nasal thing, the pressure shoots through my nose like a tornado. Then I MUST open my mouth to expel it. Maybe I can't tolerate anything but the full face mask, 'though I hate it and haven't slept since I got it a week ago.

They didn't give me any training at all, and I've read and read and read, and still don't get it. I'm just so frustrated.

Use the ramp so the pressure starts at 4 cm.

The tongue must act as a barrier to keep the air from going up the nose then down the airway and trying to exit prematurely through the mouth.
Place your tongue in the roof of your mouth with tip of tongue slightly behind the front teeth. It will keep the air from entering the mouth BUT when you go to sleep the tongue gets lazy and will often open the door again.
With lots of practice keeping the tongue in the roof of the mouth position during the day...eventually it becomes habit and the tongue will stay in place most of the time.

The pressure difference going from a fullface or nasal mask to nasal pillows is significant in feeling but is actually the same. It's just that now you are fuel injected instead of carboreated, lol. It also sounds like the ramp is not operational, with the ramp set low and operational the initial feeling of the rush of air up your nose would be far less and much more comfortable.

I'm not sure about the PRs, but my Resmed machine has different settings for different types of masks. All it takes is scrolling through the Mask Type setting and choosing which one you have. When I switched from a nasal mask to pillows, I felt like I was suffocating. Until I figured out about the different mask settings, that is.

PR S1 machines don't have a mask selection feature.
They do have a Resistance control setting but it isn't the same thing and when using non Respironics masks we are told to just turn it off. It's not going to make any difference with comfort or really anything else for that matter.

Thank you everyone. I've worked and worked on it, but there is NO way the Swift FX for Her is going to fit on my Philips One machine. I must be totally missing a part.

For now, I must keep using the full face Quattro, but it is going to eventually keep me from using the CPAP. I am going to have to get something else, and will contact supplier tomorrow.

Thanks again.

Look at the pictures here:

https://www.cpap.com/productpage/resmed ... dgear.html

There should be the mask, a short gray hose, and a little adapter that snaps onto the end of the short hose to fit the normal long hose.

I've been trying to upload pictures of the two items, but apparently the CPAP site won't let me.
