Moms of preschoolers on CPAP

Post by CPAPMom517 » Thu Jan 16, 2014 12:11 pm

Hi. Was just wondering if there are any others moms (or dads) out there that have a preschooler or any child really, that sleeps with a CPAP. My son is 3 and has been on CPAP for about the last 6 months. We recently got a new machine and a higher setting. My son always tells me he hates his mask and it leaves a lot of lines on his face. Any other parents out there going through something similar? Or have you been through it in the past?

I don't have any advise to offer, but I have a 7 year old that we suspect might have some apnea (I do). How did you know to have your child tested?

My son was born with a cleft palate and has snored and sweated profusely while he slept his whole life. After a couple years of me making a big deal of it with multiple doctors (pediatrician, ENT, and plastic surgeon) the ENT sent us for a sleep study. He has significant OSA from a lack of muscle tone in his throat and mouth due to the repaired cleft palate.

Not necessarily a direct answer, but have you tried a mask liner to make the mask more comfortable?

And overtightening a mask can actually create new microleaks around the edges... a 7 yr old should not have to be uncomfortable and 'hate' the mask.

We have a forum member with a 7 year old who was diagnosed and is now on treatment. I don't thinks she's been active on the forum recently but you may want to send her a private message to see if you can connect with her: memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=66812
When she last checked in her daughter was doing well on therapy.

There's also a pediatric section on the American Sleep Apnea Association's forum. They censor and moderate heavily so depending on what information you need, you may or may not find it help helpful.

Hi,
Aw, a 3yo on CPAP, I can't imagine, they are so tiny.

I've had an 8yo son on CPAP for the last month. He is happy with it, and uses it for 11 hours every night. Things we had to adjust:
- humidity: he likes it on lowest setting, unless he has a cold, then he likes it on highest
- pressure: 5.5 is giving us the best results. At 6, he complained about tummyache

Have you tried any other masks? We got fitted at SleepQuest, and tried on several models.

We currently have a full-face. Last night I've tried to switch him to nose-only, but it did not go over well, his nose was stuffy from the cold.

Aleks

Thanks everyone for your replies. We just switched to a ne mask because his old one was cutting his nose where his nostrils connect to hi face. This mask seems to be much better in that it is softer and more adjustable but the marks on his face in the morning last several hours. Is that normal? I don't anyone else in my area that has a child that uses CPAP so I feel kinda like me and my husband are on our own figuring this thing out. Even our supply company knows very little about pediatric CPAP masks and settings. His new machine changes pressure on its own from 6 to 10. I don't think I have any control over that setting but I think I'm supposed to be able to change the humidifier and temp settings.

Karen at PadACheek will also work with you to create a custom liner for your particular mask needs.

My 8yo has no marks on his face. One night he got a red rash, and it was gone within days with lots of moisturizer (he loves his jojoba oil).
