humidifier

Post by dawnmurray22 » Wed Jan 15, 2014 10:52 am

Would you recommend a humidifier? I suffer with dry mouth, it could be medication related and I always sleep with my mouth open, I wear a full face mask but wake up needing a drink so I have to take off my mask have a drink and go to the loo then replace it again which by this time I am awake, I would give my right arm to go to sleep at 11 30 and awake at 6am something I haven't done for many years, would a humidifier help with the dry mouth? any suggestions welcome, Thanks for this great site I have only discovered it, I was diagnosed 2 years ago although I'm used to my mask there always seems to be some issue or another, reading that I'm not alone is comforting
thanks again for your help and advice

What machine are you currently using? Brand and model???

Are you not using a humidifier at all? If the answer is no...adding a humidifier might help because any additional moisture is going to maybe help. Will it help to the extent you are wanting? That's unfortunately not something that we can offer any answers to with any certainty.
Some people just get more dry mouth than others for any number of reasons and for some people no amount of added moisture to the air will fix it...but it sure doesn't hurt to try if a person isn't using a humidifier at all.

I think a humidifier would help but also feel a chin strap will help as when you open your mouth even with a full face mask your mouth has a tendency to get dry. I use tape to keep my mouth closed. I had tried a full face mask in the past but found with tapping my mouth and a chin strap I get good sleep even on my back and never a dry mouth. I have tried several combinations and tapping still allows my tongue to drop causing air to rush into my mouth and dry it out as it guts flows around and around.

Thank you so much for your reply's first I would like you to know I am in the United Kingdom the machine I have been issued with is a ResMed I have had several different masks from nose to full face the one I am using at the moment is the ResMed full face I am due to go back for a check early in march and its then I would request a humidifier I suppose I can request one and give it a try

On a lighter note I have always struggled to except the machine as I still have a strong relationship with my hubby, he has no problem with me wearing my mask, but I have and don't think I will ever be comfortable with the situation, I always try and wait for him to go to sleep before I put my mask on, I work in pharmacy and have to look my best for work my hair was always in a mess in the morning so I now were a hair net to stop my hair getting pulled with the Velcro straps .one of your members recommended I use some tape over my mouth to help with the dry mouth. OK!!! I have a hair net, a mask with straps, a long pipe coming from the front of my face and now I should wear tape over my mouth,I am so pleased my hubby sleeps so well not to see the frightening sight lying beside him

PS I know this is very serious but some time we have to see the funny side!!

Is your ResMed machine a S9 model? or is it based on the older S8 model?

S9s look like this

S8 models look like this
https://www.cpap.com/productpage/resmed ... chine.html

The S9 model would stand a greater chance of more customization and greater humidity delivery in an effort to help with the dry mouth.

Since you have the S9 model.....make sure you get a ClimateLine hose with the humidifier.
Again it will offer the greatest chance of delivering added moisture to maybe help you with your issues with mouth dryness.
No guarantees but the ClimateLine with the humidifier set to automatic does a real good job of maintaining a 80% humidity delivery.
Without the ClimateLine hose being used the amount of moisture added to the air isn't as consistent nor is it quite near that 80% mark.

The Biotene products...worth trying since they are specifically designed for dry mouth issues.
I have no experience myself with them as I haven't had the need but from what have read...the gel does a pretty good job as it stays in the mouth longer.

I suggest you google Pap Cap - it will help protect your hair and possibly your sanity.
