full mask too big

Post by sunrise » Tue Jan 07, 2014 9:54 am

I am a new user for about a month. I have experience puffiness in my face eye area and sometimes I feel like I have a cold when I wake up. I have a very small face and I feel my mask is too big. I am trying to hang in there but it is difficult to deal with. has anyone had this problem and any suggestions.

Hi sunrise. One thing people always ask newcomers about is what equipment they are using. In your case, that especially includes the model mask and its size. You will find in the control panel a way of entering information about your equipment so it shows up on the bottom of every post, like on mine. Some full face masks, like the Mirage Quattro, have a full range of sizes, including an extra small. Many people have experienced morning puffiness on CPAP, and I don't think it's the mask, since it often is around the eyes, which the mask doesn't cover. It tends to go away after you are on your feet for a while. My experience is that over time I have stopped waking up all puffy.

I have a resmed Quattro and I have to say the tech of the company I am using is not very reliable. she takes days and weeks to get back to me. She said to me that she has never heard of anyone getting puffy. I am dry and puffy Thanks for the info I will probably try to find a mask on my own.

It's always good to fill out your profile, that way you get more response. Given that, if you are determined to buy a mask without going thru your DME/insurance, you won't be the first frustrated CPAP user to do so Try the host of this forum first: https://www.cpap.com Competitive prices with good service. Please note however that you may be shocked by the prices of popular masks... it may even shock you into going back to your crappy DME, demanding what you need and then placing a boot up their... well, never mind just where.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

I swell up around my eyes when my mask leaks into my eyes all night.

You either need the fit adjusted or another mask. If you go to the ResMed site for the mask, they have a template you can print and cut out to see if the mask is the right size. It could be the size, or simply that it's not correctly fit. See "Taming the Mirage Quattro" in my signature below for some fitting tips.

So the nurse came back with a new mask today a petite Philips gel. Guess what it is the same size as the small Quattro I just don't get it. Why are the masks so big I have a very small face and I am getting very frustrated with the company. She comes in and out in 5 minutes or so and says call me next week. Not liking this. I need to update my equipment on this site. I can be slow sometimes.

Have you looked into child size masks - they do exist and a larger one might just be the thing for you... others have done it too.

Julie I asked her that today and she said they had them, what I don't understand this is the second time at my house and she brought a petite Philips. I am seeing my doctor on Tuesday next week and I will be bringing it with me. You might think they would measure you for proper fit. I am not too impressed with the company my doctor is using.

Here's a well known secret - some doctors may know something (or a lot) about OSA, but the majority know very (extremely) little about the mechanics of treatment, e.g. machines and how they do what they do (beyond the basic premise), equipment, let alone fitting, or software, etc. They leave those details to techs and dealers, who may or may not know more than they do. Welcome to this forum, without which I think most of us would not even be on Cpap, let alone know zip about it.
