I Have A %$#@ Cold

Post by Oddprofessor » Tue Jan 07, 2014 9:23 am

I have a cold, with attendant nasal congestion and cough. How does one handle CPAPing with the need to blow one's nose every few minutes, and the general runniness. The combination of a mask over my nose and congestion isn't an appetizing one. How do you folks cope?

Vicki

there are times when you just can't use your mask. don't worry about it & do the best you can.

Just coming off a cold myself, so I "feel your pain"!

I keep a full face mask for nasal congestion episodes, but even with that, I just had to abandon it for two nights. Nothing else I could do to address the issues -- don't want to get into too many specifics, but you know what I mean!

Take decongestants at night and turn the humidity up full blast and use a full face mask.

+1 to Blackspinner's ideas;
-- I also use a Breathe-Right strip, because I can not sleep without my machine.

And we can all get into bed together with our tissue papers and Tiger Balm and Cold FX and herbal/ginger teas and sniffle so we don't expose anyone else.
Did you pass them along? Groan

I had one coming on since just before New Year's and it's going through its cycle (the worst seems to be over).
Thank goodness for my CPAP. However, I NEVER use heated humidity (which can make congestion worse) and the cooler air helps keep my nasal passages open and with my full face mask I can breathe through my mouth if need be (and it has been a necessity on a few nights). If I had to use heated humidity I'd be a miserable mess.

For the immediate symptoms, I do a couple snorts in each nostril on an inhaler and for the cough I stick a cough lozenge in one cheek and let it dissolve through the night.

To each his own.

Just got over a cold myself. First, I have a TOTAL FACE mask in the drawer for such occasions when mouth-breathing is a must. Afrin nasal spray will open those nasal passages immediately... just be careful to stop using it as soon as possible because it is highly addictive.

Benadryl dries me right up for a couple of hours and also makes me sleep.

I go along with Unclebill. When I have a cold like that, I just have to forgo the CPAP.
