Remstar Plus is now Noisy (metalic whirling sound)

Post by Guestler » Fri Jun 23, 2006 8:47 pm

Folks,

I tried to use the search function to find out if this was asked and answered already, but I couldn't find a match.

I have a 16-18 month old Remstar Plus that has a humidifier. I have traveled with it twice. I recently moved. Interestingly, it seems that it started making a metalic whirling sound on the first night after moving to a new home. I suppose it may have been jostled in the move.

Has anyone else experienced a whirling sound that is quite aggrevating with their units.

I suppose I can contact my DME, but I wonder if they will do anything since it is just an annoying problem, not system failure.

Regards, Stephen

I am pretty sure that most Respironics units have a 2 year warranty.

You might be able to deal directly with them for warranty service??

Loud noises from the machine could effect your ability to sleep ...

yeah, they do have a 2 year warranty, so by all means take it in to your dme, if it happened right after you moved than it prolly sustained enough shock to break something in the move.

Just on the slight chance that it could be human error, double check to make sure you have everything together right.

Is that rubber gasket-like thing in the hole - before the humidifier fits into it? I remember someone writting something similar, and they had used their machine without the humidifier and then forgot to insert the gasket thingy back in.

Also, does the machine fit securely onto the humidifier base?

That sounds like the way I would describe the way my machine sounds with CFlex on... any chance it wasn't on before, and it is now? Maybe you managed to press the right buttons in transit?

You shouldn't be hearing a noise in the mechine with C-Flen on or off. You might hear your breathing pattern, that's normal, the mask should make more noise than the machine.

Get the machine back to the DME (Dealer), they will send it in and hit them up for a free loaner, (REMstar APAP), Hint, hint, No don't do that, then you won't want the old one back. REMstar should fix it free. Get a receipt for yours when you give it to the DME. Jim

It sounds like the blower. Either the bearings are out or the impellor is out of alignment. Definitely take it back for repair.

I have a Remstar APAP and it definitely makes a noise with the cflex function on. It's always done that, and as people have said before, noise level varies from machine to machine. The sound moves up and down with my breathing, but it's definitely not just my breathing. I'm not the only one to have commented on this phenomenon on the boards here.

Tomhoffmanlabs has the answer. The bearings in the motor are worn and the fan is likely rubbing on the inside of the fan housing. It is going to get much worse soon and then fail completely. Warranty is two years as stated in previous posts. Get is fixes under warranty now is my advise.

yes, i agree, get it fixed now while still under warranty, just tell them that it started making noise on it's own, don't tell them that there's a possibility that it was dropped during your move. you'll shoot yourself in the foot saying that.

Hi Guestler,

Is the sound high pitched? I'm getting a very high pitched whining sound, not all that loud but annoying if you dwell on it. I think it may be my own fault as have had the unit (Resp/auto/c-flex) since Jan 2005 and have not had it serviced and only changed the white filter once. I really think it is just dirty with dust build up inside. Intend to get off my ass soon and have it checked out - also change the filter.

So, my thought in your case; have you changed your filter recently? Also, was your unit subjected to more dust during the move or in your new home?

Hope you get it resolved.
