I do agree with you that it is under diagnosed in adults. Not only is it under diagnosed, many professionals seem to think that it ends at 18 or in early adulthood based on the number of services for those age groups vs. nothing for people older who have the disorder.

Older people go to prison or they are homeless and bad health or drugs kills them off.

Or they live healthy, contented, independent lives in the community (in nice warm houses or apartments) where the only people who know are themselves, their doctors, and perhaps a couple close friends. No drugs, just a little space set aside for their own needs and hobbies.

Just how do you think they make a living to keep that apartment or rented room. They don't unless the govt foots the bill for everything. If their under govt healthcare, then they will get taken care of by the doctors. By the time the doctors get through with them they will be drugged out of their minds, and death is a certainty. Whats going to happen to all these disabled people living off the govt and the old folks living off govt when the govt has to cut back their outgoing payments for all this stuff? For all you idiots out there who don't know this the govt has its cutting back structure is in place. Its slow and gradual now. At some point it will speed up. The govt is bankrupt and they need to get rid of the dead weight. Just like the first depression killed off a bunch of people. This coming depression is going to be a doozy. There will be a massive culling. At least 50% or more of the population is going to be wiped out. They don't want to do it too quick as there needs to be a working infrastructure to get rid of the dead and maintain some working utilities to keep the govt power structure in place. It won't take much and things could spiral out of control and you could get massive out breaks of sickness and they won't have cures that they will give people. There is a so called "mystery illness" now going around that is pretty deadly. There will be more of this and on a bigger scale. News will down play it or won't say anything and govt will lie and say everything is OK and under control. Mean while you will see family dropping off one by one. When the financial turmoil hits, that will kick off things as people will not eat or eat the junk GMO crap that makes you sick and susceptible to the disease outbreaks. If your eating good and able to take care of yourself, you will be most likely healthy enough to over come any of the sicknesses going around.

How do they make a living and buy that house or rent that apartment? Easy. They don't rely upon disability. They're doctors, engineers, lawyers, university professors, university students, scientists, and more. They're in NASA, universities, hospitals, and engineering firms. There are even large software comanies specifically trying to hire autistic people to test their products for them. Most of the older ones, if they even have a diagnosis, were only diagnosed after their children were diagnosed and noticed that the modern definition of autism described how they were and went in for testing out of curiosity.
