Problem with false apnea events/high pressure when moving
Problem with false apnea events/high pressure when moving
I used the CPAP machine for the first time ever last night and noticed a problem when looking at the detailed graphs in ResScan. I frequently wake up and turn from side-to-side (only sleep on my side) because I experience hip joint pain when stay on one side for too long. During this time (I know exactly when it's happening because I use an iPhone app to record movement and sound) the ResScan shows a mask leak and a few obstructive apnea events (even thought I'm awake and can't be having apneas). After that the pressure goes up significantly, from 5-7 to 9-10 and stays up for a while (my range is set 4-12). I'm assuming this happens because the algorithm decides that it needs to handle the apneas. I'm worried that the higher pressure interferes with the quality of my sleep. What can I try to do to fix this problem? Did I get the right mask type, a pillow, given that I move so much?

There is no way for any APAP machine to know that you are awake - as long as it is running and not is a ramp or settling mode, it will be scoring airway eventsart11 wrote:even thought I'm awake and can't be having apneas

Re: Problem with false apnea events/high pressure when moving
Hi art11:
What you are seeing is an artifact of holding your breath as you roll over. Holding your breath is an actual apnea but is unrelated to your sleep apnea.
Your system can't tell that you are awake and treats it.
The resulting pressure increase is the result.
It likely won't have any effect on your sleep quality and, as you noticed, the pressure drops back to a more 'normal' range in a short time.
If you are really awake as opposed to semi-awake, then try to remember to keep breathing while you roll over. That will most likely eliminate the issue.
The mask leaks probably come from the movement and shouldn't be of concern if it lasts for only a short time.
As a very new user, my advice is to not over think everything. Wait a week or two to see how things progress.
There will be variability night-to-night so longer term averages are better indicators of progress.
