Re: Removing odor from inside CPAP machine
Is the machine used?
Could someone have sprayed something like an air freshener with the machine running. Just a guess but some of those air fresheners seem like their oil based, especially the continuous release kind. That way the won't evaporate right away and require heat to help the process. I swear those things go rancid and people won't clean or replace them. Something oil based would take forever to leave.
I'd have to wonder if water and pursleep or something else back washed into the machine.
I had a concern I may have put water into my machine when I accidentally bumped it and water sloshed around the tray violently. Fortunately it was just water and the machine seems fine. If it had happened with something like puresleep I had no idea how I would get it out.

White vinegar is the gold standard for killing odours. Try running the machine with a vinegar soaked pad next to the air intake. Half an hour should do it. Best to do it inside, perhaps in a drawer or box so the vinegar fumes don't get blown away by any air currents
Good luck

Re: Removing odor from inside CPAP machine
I have a friend in the Filtration industry that says he is working on impregnating carbons in various filters and asked me if I had issues with smoke, perfume or other type odors while using my CPAP. I said I did not personally but would ask around. is this something that would be beneficial to anyone - basically it would be an ultra fine filter marketed as an odor guard ultra fine - the carbon would be encapsulated and bonded to the ultra fine which would filter out a large amount of odorous particles. Please let me know.

I noticed one thing. When I got my new machine it seemed to have a smell to it of plastic. I used it a couple of days and the odor seemed to disappear. Go Figure.

Well, I guess that since the innards are made of plastic then it probably would smell like plastic!! Mine probably have also but I honestly can't remember now. At least the oder went away pretty fast.

Some times I wonder if the odor is from the mask or the hose. I changed hoses yesterday and I noticed a smell. Go figureJ-Mac wrote:Hi Patrick!Patrick A wrote:I noticed one thing. Re: Removing odor from inside CPAP machine
I read a bunch of replies and came up with this solution and it worked like magic (at least for smoke). I placed my CPAP machine outside (temp. was around 45F) and ran it for about 3 hours. More time could only help it more. When I started purging it with fresh air I also removed the intake filter and placed a small saucer/bowl of vinegar just below the inlet. I put a small kitchen towel over the inlet and saucer/bowl and covered up the leaky areas the best I could. This way all of the intake air was passing over the (cleansing vinegar) and directly into the CPAP machine. IT WORKED LIKE A CHARM!!!!! I hope this works for you.

Ozium on a cotton ball, just outside the intake--run for 3-4 hours
It works really well when freshly sprayed; ditch the ball before you use the machine.

Re: Removing odor from inside CPAP machine
My CPAP used to develop a dank, undesirable smell (probably because I didn't clean it like I should!). Ever since I started using a SoClean sanitizer, I haven't had to deal with it. The ozone it generates is a pretty powerful odor killer.
I once rigged it so that the ozone diverted to a large box that contained my stinky window air conditioner & it deodorized it better than the times when I used to take it outside, take it apart, & hose it down. Maybe something like the SoClean can work for your situation.

Condensate in the CPAP HOSE will smell musty, like an old refrigerator or dirty air conditioner. Heated hoses help but do not entirely eliminate the musty condensate odor. Take the hose off, fill it with water from the bathtub faucet, swish it around, empty & dry by running the CPAP for a few seconds.

I bought a product from amazon called clean-night from amazon, worked well for me, easy to use too, just sprayed on the filter and smelled good.
Re: Removing odor from inside CPAP machine
in my opinion I think it is bacteria or mold. I get that awful smell when I put my face up to the blower too. I noticed it starting when i used the auto start feature of my Respironics machine. I would put my mask on lay down in bed and then inhale or exhale. When I would exhale I was actually breathing my moist air into my machine. That pressure caused the machine to turn on and blowback. But I realize that all those exhalation probably means that I deposited bacteria into the machine. so if I can figure out a way to sanitize the inside inside of my machine, I'm hosed. Pardon the pun.
