Newbie with questions

Post by clibrn » Thu Dec 26, 2013 9:23 am

So I did a split sleep study. My AHI was 93.
I left with an S9 Autoset, H5i and a Quatto Air Mask. The S9 set to 5-20.
The first two nights went ok -- But I didn't sleep well due to the change. I had some small leaks.
Biggest issue was my nose always itching!
Last night I took an ambien. I woke several times in the middle of the night due to "mask fart".
The pressure seemed alot higher (I assume because I was in a different stage of sleep?).
I had a hard time adjusting the mask at a high pressure and continued to suffer air blowouts.
Does this mean the mask too loose? of too tight? or poor fit?
I have not downloaded any data as I am not sure how to interpret it yet.
Thanks!

Well, it really could be anything. Try playing around with the fit. A little more snug, a little less snug, a little to the left, a little to the right. When I lay on my side, I move my mask to the side a bit. Seems counter intuitive, as I'm not "centered", but it seals.

It may take a few days to find the best fit. Just remember this isn't a sprint. It's a "first day of the rest of your life" type thing.

I seemed to work with it easier my first few weeks if I would point the inlet coupling toward my wife, and loop the hose over my head resting on the pillow. Takes pressure off mask. Just a thought.

Good luck!

Read everything under announcements on the home page. Someone suggested just really scratching and rubbing your nose and nostrils before masking up and I found it really helped. You can always turn your machine off and then back on if you wake up and pressure is too high. Also do searches on mask leaks and you will find suggestions. I had to change masks to get the leaks to stop. Call your DME to help you. Put Sleepyhead on your computer and actually look at what makes you improve. Use this forum, they are great.

n your split study, what pressure did they determine was optimal for you? Do you have a copy of your report? If not, I'd suggest you get a copy. As things progress questions can arise that you may not be able to answer without having the reports. The reason I ask about your pressure is if it has to climb much, then the mask is being expected to function at a higher pressure than it was adjusted for when putting it on. Once you do whatever things get recommended specific to you mask, you may want to consider not having much of a rise in pressure and starting close to where you are going to end up so that your mask fit needs don't change much. If you already know you are only using a pressure of maybe 7 all night, then what I've mentioned won't likely be relevant.
