New Question

Post by gkeenan » Fri Jun 23, 2006 7:31 am

Hello all...well since hooking up the humidifier and using the pillows I've been sleeping really well, until lately.

I find myself waking up in the middle of the night with my tounge stuck to the roof of my mouth, I mean really STUCK, I have to peel it off and then rub my toung back and forth to get moisture in there...my mouth and throat are so dry...

Does anybody know why this is happening?

thanks
Gail

Are you still taking that swig of Elmer's Glue before retiring???

Licking all them stamps?????

You may need to cut that out!

Gail,

Not sure I have a reason for the problem, but rest assured that I share it with you. Two things that seem to help are:

1) Crank up the humidifier to one of the highest settings. By default, some of the moisture will be filtered into your mouth while you sleep.
2) When you wake up with that awful drymouth, untape, take a good sip of water, tape back up and try to get more sleep.

The combination of both of the above seem to have improved my sleep and, for the past few nights, my uninterrupted sleep has lengthened considerably.

Good luck!

Sounds like you are not using a humidifier. I had that happen before I added the humidifier and put it on level 3 for heat.

I've taken the heat off...only use the water...I can't tolerate the warm air. So I need to put the heat back on? Oh no.....

Gail,

Sounds to me like you're leaking air out your mouth. Try taping or the Polident adhesive strips. I have the same reaction to heated humidification as you and therefore only use passover humidification (all year long). The only few times I've experienced dry mouth (even with a full face mask) is when I wake up during the night and realize my tongue has not stayed on the roof of my mouth and/or my mouth fell open.....sometimes due to congestion in the nasal passages.

Best wishes,

I think Wulfman's reply should be explored. For me it doesn't matter how many chin straps I have on, or how clear my nasal passages are, my mouth flops open as soon as I doze off, with a nasal interface, unless I use tape...

The other thing I've discovered is: parking my tongue on roof of my mouth doesn't work for me, but putting the tip my tongue against the lower, front gum line and 'pushing' my lower jaw forward does work.

When I started cpap, I did not have a dry mouth problem. However, later I did have the problem. I tied one leg off of tights over my mouth and underneath my Swift mask. This ended the dry mouth problem.

I am not a mouth breather so do not know if this would work for someone who is.

Thanks again RG for your suggesting the legs off of tights for securing masks.
