How to clean mask cushions (safely and smell free)

Post by Ruinednose » Tue Dec 17, 2013 5:27 pm

I was told by DME to use soap and warm water,

Im scared to use soap because i don't wanna smell the soap the rest of the night . and also im afraid the chemicals will ruin the mask.

What are the methods you use?

Dawn dishwashing liquid.
It's good at grease and oil removal and it doesn't leave any residual odor.

I like Palmolive anti-bacterial dish soap (bright orange liquid). It's totally subjective, but I like the mild smell, therefore it doesn't bother at all. Besides it fades away in about a half an hour of CPAP use. I never noticed any degradation of the cushions or my face, at least so far. Experiment and use whatever suits you is the point of this reply.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Just use a mild plain soap with no antibacterials or moisturizers -- baby shampoo is recommended. Some are unscented too. Wash daily and dry.

This boards sponsor sells wipes for cleaning mask: https://www.cpap.com/productpage/beaumo ... eaner.html

I have been using them since the summer time. They work good!

I use Palmolive "Original", which is a scented dishwashing detergent, one of the ones recommended in my ResMed owner's guide. However, if you rinse it adequately, the smell is also rinsed off. In fact, that's how I can tell if I rinsed it enough after washing it, if the smell of the detergent is gone. Then I know that it's clean, not even any detergent left on it. If there's just a faint smell left on it, that doesn't bother me, and it goes away after a night.

I wipe my mask down every morning using Pampers Thick Wipes for Sensitive Skin. You can also use the generic brand. Be sure the baby wipes have no alcohol or aloe. Some say "aloe juice", and that’s ok. Alcohol will damage the mask plastic and aloe will leave a film. There is a Walgreens close to my work that carries cpap supplies. I get cpap wipes there when they have them. I also wash my mask every weekend with a toothbrush and baby shampoo. I then soak the mask in a plastic tub or a few hours in baby shampoo and water solution. I then rinse the mask very well. If I don’t, the baby scent will upset my tummy. Look on the mask manufacturer’s website about vinegar. Some recommend you don’t use it, but I suspect a little won’t hurt.

I use Target Baby Shampoo....just the lite scent but it fades too quickly for me.

I wash my humidifier and mask every day with Ivory dishwashing liquid in some lukewarm water.
I like the slight residual odor. I was the hose every week with the same. I wash the head gear
when it looks like it needs it.

For my daily upkeep, I purchased one of those SoClean CPAP sanitizers. Works for me...
