Without CPAP and I'm feeling it.

Post by bryanftc » Fri Dec 13, 2013 7:07 pm

Sometime towards the end of December my Respr 60 started making this really annoying whining noise. It also felt like the air flow wasn't as comfortable as it once was, the machine was only a year old. I had purchased the machine through CPAP.com so I thought it was best to call them about the problem. I was asked some questions over the phone and the operator determined it would need to be sent in for repair. I was originally told it could take up to three weeks to get the machine back. I knew life would be rough without the CPAP but I went through years without treatment whats three weeks.

I sent the machine to CPAP.com early in November and received an email from them on Nov. 18th that they are going to have to wait for a replacement for my machine. That was the last email I have received from them, I did call them around a week ago to discuss what the status was but the operator had no further information than the email. He did inform me that it may take as long as after the Holidays.

I know there is nothing that CPAP.com can really do while they await the machine from the manufacturer but this whole process has been very frustrating. Especially now since I am starting to notice the effects of not having my treatment getting worse everyday. The first couple of weeks was really no problem, but now I'm feeling fatigued and falling asleep at work again. I have also noticed that my weight loss that had been going very well has taken a huge hit and has reached a snails pace compared to how it was going.

I think what I'm going to have to do now is always have a backup on hand for situations just like this. Going back to my original state pre cpap has made me realize how amazing these machines are and it truly has been a life changer.

bryan, did the operator talk to you about a loaner machine? https://www.cpap.com/productSearch.php?query=loan

No they did not, but I did see it after the fact and didn't think 140 dollars for the auto cpap was worth it for something that was only going to be gone three weeks. If I had known at the time it would take anywhere from 6-8 weeks, we would maybe be having a different conversation right now.

Another thing I don't like about the loaner machine is you don't even know if you will get the same make and model. What if I got a machine and it's just terrible, without having more info on what I would get seems a little suspicious to me.

Buy a cheap second hand brick and then you have a back up.

Yeah that is my plan for the future, I also just recently got some new health insurance. The insurance sounds like it's not going to be much help though, probably going to have to be all out of pocket.

I bought my machine from secondwindcpap.com and am very happy with the machine and the service provided especially as I am in Australia and prices here are silly. They have some machines starting as low as $95 may be worth a look

Hi bryanftc,

When I thought I was going to be in a similar situation with my machine last year, I PMd Carolyn expressing concern about how long it would take and to make a long story short, they were going to send me another replacement out of their inventory. It turned out that I was at fault as erroneously thought there was something wrong with my machine when there wasn't.

The issue is and this isn't a matter of placing blame is you shouldn't have to wait that long for your machine to be repaired when your health is at stake. And in my opinion, you need to let Carolyn know that who is an excellent listener and why cpap.com is the best place to do business with.

So yeah, having a backup helps but this policy of making people wait forever for a replacement is simply not acceptable and needs to be changed. If this doesn't happen with many non health related items, it shouldn't be happen with a health item. For comparison's sake, when I had a Canon MF machine and it failed, they sent me an immediate replacement and only then did I send the failed product. In my opinion, once our machine is verified to be flawed, the same type policy should be in play.

My two cents.

Carolyn Goodman--one of the owners of cpap.com.
She and her husband Johnny are very involved in their business and are awesome people.
They are also the sponsors of this forum.

I suggest everyone watch their local Craigslist to see if someone offers a good deal on a CPAP.

I've bought several top of the line APAPs for $200 to $300 and now have a spare, but it took quite a while watching the listings.

Start looking while your current machine is still working, and you're less likely to get into a bind.
