Feedback needed: Respironics 460

I just finished a new sleep study, the therapist is recommending a Respironics 460 System 1 for $300 (used).

Is this a decent machine, is that a fair price? Thanks!! You guys are my experts.

It's a full efficacy data machine and software is easily available and easy to use.
What else comes with the machine at this price? How many hours has it been used?

I didn't ask what else comes with it, I assume a carrying case and power supply.

So, a good machine? Will it work with a battery pack?

Yes, it will run off a battery but you have to make sure you get the correct DC connector as the plug in in the back is a different size.

It's full efficacy data machine. Fixed cpap mode mainly with some limited APAP mode capability. How good of a deal depends on hours of use, humidifier included, etc.

Hi PanzerMax,

I have one and it is a good machine. On-screen data is limited on the PRS1 machines, but everything you'd want for data is really there if you download the SD card to your computer and use SleepyHead.

Number of hours may not matter as much as whether the machine has used up all its Auto-Trial time. These machines can be set to Auto mode for up to 30 days. One version of firmware allows five resets to get new 30-day trials. You may never need that feature, but I found it helpful to use a few days in Auto when I switched masks and let the machine search for a better CPAP pressure. If the used machine has days left without needing a reset, that could be useful. You can ask, but to see you'd need pull the SD card and read it with a word processing program (Word, TextEdit, whatever) The properties.txt file buried inside the folders in the SD card will have a line near the bottom that looks like this: "TS=6,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,1,1,1,1" The first number indicates the days already used up for Auto (6 in this example, leaving 24 days out of the original 30 still to use) and the second-to-last "1" means it is still Auto-Trial capable. Since you'll be dealing with proving compliance, you may not want to mess with that for a while.

As Pugsy asked, what comes with it? If it comes with humidifier that's a good price. But even if it is just the blower, and not the humidifier, then the $300 is a little cheaper than SecondWind has showing online for a "gently used" 460 (I don't know if they include hose and carry case).

If it doesn't include much, find out what it would cost you to add everything. You've mentioned you don't have a humidifier with your S7, but if you change your mind do look at the costs. If the "everything added" price is getting to be nearer $450, note that our hosts at CPAP.com have last year's model 450 (new, with warranty, hose, humidifier, carry case, free shipping, etc.) on sale for $488 (and I don't know if it would be lower if you called, or if the 460 would have a great undisclosed price too). Last year's model doesn't have the heated hose feature. You didn't seem too interested in that, but if the used 460 you are being offered comes with humidifier but without heated hose there is a kit you can buy later to add that capability if you change your mind.

Edit: also if you have insurance which would cover purchase, check to see if your out-of-pocket would be better going with insurance and a new machine.

Sleep study in 2010 (11cm CPAP). Pillows (Swift FX>TAP PAP >Bleep). PRS1 “Pro” 450/460 until recall, now Aircurve 10 VAuto. Tape mouth. Palatal Prolapse solved by AlaxoStent & VAuto EPAP 4cm, PS 3.6cm = 0.0 AHI

There will be a sticker on the bottom of the blower unit that has an 8 digit number on it in code for manufacture date..example 20130202 would be year/month/day of manufacture...Feb 2, 2013.

Total run hours is available in the Info clinical menu...if it has low hours then there's a good chance the limited APAP mode hasn't been used up. If it has high hours then the APAP mode feature may have been used up.

If the price includes the humidifier..like SleepyCpap says...decent price but if it is just the blower..there are better deals out there if you are paying out of pocket and buying blower only.
The 60 series machine also has the heated hose option which may or may not be of use to you. You would need the humidifier to make use of that option though.

Insurance, ha! I wish.

It came with the hose, Ultra Mirage II mask, and massive brick power cord that pretty much negates any size reduction advantage over my ResMed 7 Lightweight

I will see what I can learn about the auto trial features. The therapist did not mention there were limits to the usage....
