Old Cpap Machine Tech Versus New

Post by jucs » Sun Oct 13, 2013 12:00 pm

Hi everyone,
I have now been on cpap coming up on 4 years in Nov. My machine is in my signature. My mother in law is a new cpap patient and had this machine when she visited:

http://www.resmed.com/us/products/s9_se ... c=patients

I could not BELIEVE how QUIET it was!

Mine is like an aircraft taking off in comparison. And, it disturbs my wife big time. Of course insurance won't cover a replacement.

I was wondering what people's experiences of upgrading from 4 year old technology and also opinions on the model I posted.

Have you checked out the prices on cpap.com?
You could also see what is on secondwindcpap.com.
You could contact STLMark or papman857 and see what they have.
Edit: check on the machine in my signature for my recommendation.

Every generation of XPAP machines from each manufacturer has their "noisy" and "quiet" machines.
If you read some of the posts by users who have the newer/newest machines, there are complaints about "noise", too.
It would appear that you're using an M Series machine from Respironics. Mine are the even older Legacy Series and are about seven or eight (or more) years old. Mine are generally pretty quiet. With use, they can start getting noisier.

It's called "the luck of the draw". But, if I was the owner of an M Series, I'd be thinking about upgrading, too.

My last unit was a Respironics M Series and it didn't seem that loud to me. Then three years ago it had to be replaced since it was obsolete and they had stopped repairing them at that point.

I first tried a Resmed S9 and was amazed at how quiet it was. Then tried a Respironics System One and again was amazed at how quiet it was,
I got the System One and after three years it is still quiet.

Another point: your link points to the S9 series, which encompasses many machines.
Avoid anything with the word "Escape" in the title.
Here is a color-coded summary which should get you on the right track.

I was wondering if the data can be pulled from this machine so a doc can have a look...it says it has an SD card. Thanks!

Which machine? Are you referring to the S9 series of machines with those SD cards?
Yes, there is data available on the machines but how much data depends on the Model Name....The S9 Escape has hours of use only.
The S9 Escape Auto has hours of use and AHI only.
For full efficacy data...the S9 ELite or AutoSet is needed.
Just because there is a SD card doesn't always mean there is much data on that SD card.

... and how many DME's have said, "Of course it has data; it has an SD card"?
Our definition of useful data is a bit different from insurance companies and DME's.
AHI and Leak are the big ones, but AHI breakdown and waveform data should be available for problem solving by us or our doctors.

I was referring to the autoset. Thanks for the response.

My wife was diagnosed but at a level that insurance won't cover it. She had a bunch of episodes during rem but not high enough during non-rem. So, it did not fit the "box" for insurance coverage. The sad thing is the doctor was letting "what gets paid by insurance" as guiding whether she should get a machine or not. When asked "is this the reason she is waking up during the night?" The answer was "yes."

Given the way insurance has gone, it would be out of pocket anyway due to the high deductible now. Of course this assumes not going through a supplier who has jacked the price up DOUBLE what is say available on a site like cpap.com. One I told him "we would pay for this dude!" he agreed to write the order and give us a copy so we could go buy the machine ourselves.

Is there a software program you can purchase to pull in the data from the SD card? Thanks!

From which machine? The S9? Which model?

You can try SleepyHead...it's free. Links in my signature.
