Data card not reading?

It has been a long time since I tried to read my data card. I use rescan (an older version I think). It said it was,downloading but when I went to view the data all that was viewable eerie dates and the pound sign. Will an updated version of the rescan data reader help? I worry that myra Ta card is shot and the doctor won't get any info off it next time I see him.
