Who has the Medicare contract for CPAP items?

Post by FoxNewsFan » Fri Nov 08, 2013 9:40 am

Hi Folks,
After July 1, 2013, the company that was supplying me with CPAP supplies paid by Medicare no longer can do it because they lost the competitive bid. How do I find out who can now handle this for Medicare? My zip code is 11952. A company called American Home Patient called me yesterday and put a message on my machine to call them back. Any reviews of this company?
I went to several websites but could not understand what they were trying to say.

Are you on straight Medicare or an advantage plan or a supplemental plan?

If it is straight Medicare you should be able to go to Medicare .gov and search the site for your answer.

Since I am on the opposite coast and I have an advantage plan I can't be of much more help.

I have the site in my signature:
Just click, enter your zip code, and follow the cpap competitive bid box.
The distance defaults to your zip code, but you can enter miles you can reasonably travel.
You can also print out a list of the mail order suppliers;
but get them on the phone before assuming they will have anything you need.
(edit: I see you can click on manufacturers and models, now, but a call may be more current)

I have American Home Patient and I am not impressed. It takes too long to get anything from them and you can't return an opened mask.

I have been using American Home Patient for the past six years and am completely satisfied with them.

If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan and you choose the supplier off of the Medicare Supplier List per Chunky Frog link, be sure to call them and see if they take your insurance. I have Humana Advantage and some of the suppliers based on my zip code do not take my insurance. For some reason, at least around here, Humana Advantage is not loved by some of the vendors in my area. For an example, a real good dermatologist that I want to see for a skin condition will not take me. Now, a DME about 2 mi. from my house won't take me.

Medicare "Advantage" plans tend to limit your providers, because they have contracted with these providers
to accept even less money then straight Medicare.
Medicare supplements cost more, but your provider network is the entire list of Medicare providers.
An advantage plan is equivalent to an HMO.
Been there, burned the T-shirt!

The best way to find it, ask your doctor. He would know reliable suppliers.

It's not the doctor's job.
If you have a Medicare Advantage, ask them for their provider list.
Otherwise consult the Medicare site; then call to be sure, as updates can be slow.
