Do u think most people have apnea and don't even know?

Post by KsUp » Sun Oct 27, 2013 2:51 pm

I know I just posted I was just curious. I'm 18 with mild moderate sleep apnea and I basically had to force my doc to order me a sleep study and then I was diagnosed, I can't imagine how much this gets overlooked. I bet alot of people have it and don't even know or care, or care to get a sleep study.

I was just thinking about it

I'm sure a lot of people spend their entire life with undiagnosed apnea. I was diagnosed at age 66 but was told in my 20's that I frequently stopped breathing in my sleep and snored a lot. I just assumed it was a quirk until I started taking two long naps during the day.

Just a guess on my part, but I think it's very undiagnosed.

I agree, I think it had been a root cause in my panic disorder, and it p*sses me off when my dad thinks its all about money and that I don't need my cpap, if he was having the exhaustion I had he would think twice

Oh I am pretty sure I had it for a few years before my husband made me get checked out. I notice the symptoms on some people at work and when I mention Sleep Apnea to them, it is like is just said something in another language! LOL!

I KNEW hubby had it, but in order to get him to go, I had to go too.
Who knew that I really DID snore as loud as he said?
I just thought he was being ornery.
I have to agree that most of the people who have apnea, have never been tested;
and I hate to think of all those who have been diagnosed, but are not being treated.

I don't think "most" people have sleep apnea but I do think that a lot more have it than have been diagnosed.

Yes. Probably 75% of the population have AHI>10 by the time they are 60.

For some reason, women seem to get it later in life - after menopause. But that is only a generality - many have it as kids and it goes undiagnosed.

It is amazing what abuse the body and mind can take and still function. But eventually it catches up with you.

Yes, it causes all kinds of "emotional" problems and the stupid idiot medical profession has largely not figured it out.

Don't be so rough on your dad. Even most damn doctors don't know any better.

Besides, your dad's judgment might be impaired by undiagnosed sleep apnea.

I 100% agree with CF on this! I have people in my personal life and professional life that probably have it but don't know it or know it but don't acknowledge it. In all cases I believe it is denial that is raising its ugly head. The only difference between the two groups in my opinion is the former can sense something is wrong but don't want to find out what (stay ignorant of the problem so you don't have to deal with it; it will probably go away), the latter know it from being diagnosed or due to all of the symptoms and pleadings from other SA suffers (who are being sucessfully treated themselves) and are trying desperately to help them help themselves. I feel it is denial, at least it was with me as I was in both groups during the 15 years it took for me to finally do something about it and change my life forever .

"if he was having the exhaustion I had he would think twice"

There are a lot of people that, until it happens to them, means it doesn't happen.
having restful sleep your entire life does not give one perspective on another's suffering. I know from personal experience. Makes me sick sometimes at the lack of empathy in the world these days.

Although measurement techniques and definitions have varied, most studies have shown that 1 in 5 adults has at least mild OSA (eg, AHI >5) and 1 in 15 has moderate or severe OSA (eg, AHI >15)

Those of us diagnosed and treated are the tip of the iceberg.

I'm sure I've had it for years. Even though, to me, I slept like a baby, I was always tired and would fall asleep at work and at stop lights and once while driving. My husband said I snored but he would say it whenever someone complained about his snoring. My doctor never suggested a sleep study until I changed doctors two months ago and on my very first visit she asked if I'd ever had a sleep study and here I am trying to get acquainted with my CPAP and mask.

I am sure I have had it at least since I was a teenager as my best friends reminded me I constantly fell asleep in class. Unfortunately, I had no idea until I wondered a few year ago if what I was attributing to psych med withdrawal insomnia was really sleep apnea. Lo and behold, I was correct.

No he's actually had several sleep studies because he snores LOUD sometimes and no sleep apnea or anything was found in them

I'm not rough on him in reality either, it's just these symptons get ridiculous, didnt mean to come across rough on here
