Sleep Therapy Daily Details
Hi Everyone,
In the Encore Pro grafts for the Sleep Therapy Daily Details pressure
(cm H2O) between 3 1/2 hours, the auto CPAP line stops at the max
pressure of 19 and starts again at the 5th hour at 19 again...can someone
please explain why this is happening...My pressure is 12/19, I get breaks
like this pretty often...I am still not feeling as well as I would like to feel,
lots better though, still have to have my naps to get through my day...
Any reply's would be appreciated. Hope I have explained it right...
Have a great weekend everyone...

Mar,
I don't use that machine, but have seen references to a "split night" setting in the machine that should be set to a value of 0 (zero) to turn it off. From the hours you describe, that would be my first place to look.
How long have you had this particular machine?..... and how frequently does it do this? I would think that if it's the "split night" setting, it would do it every night.
Best wishes,
Den

Hi Den...
I have had my Remstar Auto for about 10 months, the split night is
off, and I think I have figured it out.... I think it represents how long
in minutes I stayed at 19 and it happens alot almost every night....I wonder though, if I should raise the pressure to the max of 20?? My titrated pressure was 19...

You could try it and see what happens and whether you hit that number.

Den,I am going to do just that.
OGH, When I went to my final results for the titration study, I had
to see the tech to try the mask and pressure etc. and I had mentioned
about a bi-level machine with my max pressure being so high,
he said I would have to have another sleep study done on a bi-level machine. I said forget it, the reason being that I needed the c-flex and the auto and I didn't think any of the bi-levels had those features..They do don't they?? Will give it some thought and talk to the sleep lab, I really do think I could improve more with one...thanks for the replies..

Mar,
I THINK what they call "BiFlex"....is to Bi-PAP what "CFlex" is to CPAP.....just a different letter at the beginning of the word to designate which category of machine it goes with.
I'll post the machine link here so you can read for yourself.

the machine is turning OFF, most likely due to large mask or mouth breathing. It starts again when it senses you breathing.
You need to:
Go into the machine's setup, and on the second to last parameter enable the Patient Alert feature. By enabling the Patient alert you disable the Auto Off/Start feature. Auto On will still work, but Auto Off is disabled (by enabling Patient Alert).
The Auto OFF function is the most STUPID feature I've ever seen them put on a machine. Must have been a Respironics Manager that came up with that feature.
To test:
Remove mask while machine is ON and set it on the nightstand, wait 1.5 to 2 minutes. Machine will probably turn off. Not touching the machine, put the mask back on and breathe normally for about 4 breaths, the machine should start back up.
This is what it will do to you should you develop a large mask leak or start mouth breathing, the machine "thinks" you have removed the mask and turns off the machine.

If I was a Dr., I'm not it looks like that would be my choice, I'm thinking of one for me too. My pressure is only 15.5 cm, but I could use some comfort.
Auto or Auto BiPAP, a tough call out of pocket, but might happen, Jim
I used to think people just got the Bi-PAP to just have the best, but I am starting to see the light, I've been driving Fords too long.(Still am, 3 1978 models) It wouldn't hurt to have a Medical Caddy in the Barn.

yes you should raise the HIGH pressure to the maximum or 20cm on that machine if your last titration was 19cm. Your pressure is extremely high. I wonder if that mask you are using may be causing you problems at that pressure, that mask may prevent the machine from reading and responding correctly.
Probably the better machine for you would have been the Bi-pap Auto, it functions like your Remstar Auto w/cflex but offers bi-flex therapy and has a higher pressure ceiling of 25cm.

But I can understand why your wanting to use an autopap, if there is anyway to lower that pressure I would explore it. You may want to visit a ENT and see what can be done to possibly lower your pressure (remove an obstruction, polyp etc.). You would almost have to go to Stanford Sleep Center to determine the blockage requiring that high pressure as they are about the only lab around equipped to find that info out.
Do you have any idea other than the tongue just falling into the back of the throat?

Thanks everyone for the replies and advice. I will turn up
the pressure and also do what guest advised....Some nights
are great no large leaks, no mouth breathing, no large amounts
of snores, and some nights they all happen, I love my Swift and
it does great most nights at most pressures... So will see what happens on the Encore Pro grafts for a week on pressure 20...Thanks again....
