ASV is working!

Post by rd1978 » Mon Oct 07, 2013 7:00 am

After 3 months on CPAP with an average AHI of more than 32.00 (almost entirely centrals actually caused by the CPAP) I was finally switched to ASV. Now my AHI is averaging less than 1.5! First time in more than 15 years that I've slept well. ASV definitely takes some getting used to, but it's truly life-changing!

Special shout-out to JohnB for helping me find effective settings that I could tolerate!
Severe (AHI 65.1) Sleep Apnea diagnosed June 2013
Began CPAP use July 10, 2013
Diagnosed with Complex SA in August
Switched to ASV in October

Here's hoping you continue to have many, many more nights of wonderful sleep!

Congrats! But, please, what is ASV?

It's a special high end machine that is designed to specifically address central apneas as well as obstructive apneas.
While it's normal for everyone to have a few centrals some people have way too many for various reasons and they need a special machine to help them breath when the centrals pop up.
With a central apnea the airway is open and the conventional cpap/apap/bipap machines are designed to deal with obstructive apneas where the airway tissues are collapsed so the conventional machines don't help the people with a large number of centrals.
For some people the conventional machines actually make the centrals much worse. That's what happened with the OP in this thread.
He had obstructive sleep apnea and the cpap machine used to treat his obstructive apneas triggered the centrals so he had to get this special machine that can treat both.

There are a lot of challenges with ASV and I seem to have faced them all . But in spite of that it does offer great rewards if you are able to adapt to the technology.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.
