While you work with them to find out if the cpap treatment is working, I wanted to tell you that you probably -will- feel worse for a while. After you have been having apnea for a long time you don't really feel pain anymore. You may look a wreck to all those around and act like you are drugged and in denial but for some it is worse when the mask works and apnea episodes stop. I'm not sure why. This following is what I think.

Assuming your apnea is bad, it causes your brain to starve oxygen while you are unconscious. When you wear the mask, apnea stops, the seizures you have stop and it seems that the nerves are the first thing to recover and the you do feel worse all over. A lot of people quit at this time because for the first time they can actually feel something, what they feel is the results severe apnea. They feel like shit.

Physically you may be fucked up from apnea. Small lesions on in the brain from the constant deprivation of oxygen. Cell damage to the body. I've read that women typically have more brain damage than men. After a while of nightly constant torture you no longer feel anything. Pain receptors burnt out? Have you seen guys that are a wreck from sleep apnea? When you talk to them they mostly are in denial I think because they don't feel pain.

So feeling the pain, the pain receptors are one of the first things to be "repaired". To me, what you are going through has been called "paying back the sleep debt". The mask, the machine works. You no longer are going through the apnea episodes. Depending on how long you had apnea or how much real damage, Three months? Longer? Before you really feel good. You will know it when it happens. It's like you really wake up. Until then, the drudgery continues but with a mask and all this which seems like it is worse but it is not. Your pain receptors are one of the first things to heal. You you feel is like shit because your body has brain lesions and cell damage from the apnea.

The latest thing I read is that we also suffer adrenal fatigue. Your adrenal glands panic and fire during apnea for so long you are suffering "adrenal fatigue". I believe it is from excess adrenalin in the body and from the constant use of the adrenalin gland during apnea. Maybe it makes sense that it may take a very long time to get rid of excess adrenalin in the body.

It does get better. You will realize some day that some thing changed and you have finally woken up. Until then, hang in there brother. Don't give up on this.

d.m.

I'm not sure it's "normal," but a number of people have that feeling even when their CPAP appears to be working correctly. Many of the people who have that problem find it goes away gradually.

Don't get too complacent. There could still be something wrong. There's a good chance it will get better if you hang on for a week or too.

Your best bet at this point is to tough it out for a week or so and see what happens. Try not to do any sleeping, even napping, without the CPAP. However, if you absolutely must sleep some without it, don't give up on the CPAP.

The 450P is an excellent machine. Please put it in your profile. It will be listed as something like
PR system one REMstar PRO CPAP machine with Cflex.

If you learn how to use SleepyHead to look at your data, there's a LOT of data there that will tell you if it's working right, how bad your apneas are, whether you have particular time of night with problems, whether you are leaking all your air out, etc. It can REALLY help figure out what's going wrong.

Look at the details on the daily view. You won't understand everything, so don't panic. Look at it and see what you can understand. Don't obsess over the data yet.

The 60% Oxygen saturation during your sleep test shows you probably need CPAP really bad.

Can you please take a screen shot of a couple of typical detailed reports and post them for us to see?
Here's how.

2 things stand out so far...your AHI is not running less than 5.0...so a little higher than we would like to see
and your hours of sleep are averaging 4 hours long term.
Are those hours fragmented? Still having trouble getting to sleep and staying asleep?
Are you ever sleeping with the mask and machine off?

Are leaks disturbing your sleep?

You are averaging around 4 hours of mask time....do you wake up often during that time...have trouble getting to sleep and staying asleep???
Are you sleeping without the mask at any time???

Going on 4 hours of sleep a night is a pretty much guarantee for feeling like crap....if those 4 hours of sleep aren't solid hours of sleep even more crap....if you are sleeping without the mask or machine then even more crap.

So first things that stand out are quantity of time with mask on...then maybe quality of sleep and finally the AHI is a bit higher than I would like to see but only 4 or 5 hours of sleep with the AHI of 0.0 still wouldn't let you feel better.

If leaks are disrupting sleep then they need to be fixed. You are probably hitting large leak territory some of the time but most likely not staying there for prolonged periods of time.
Hours of sleep need to be fixed and sleep quality needs to be addressed since you say you have trouble getting to sleep and staying asleep...is this new since cpap started or did you have this issue prior to cpap start?
