can't breathe

Post by chrate » Sun Sep 22, 2013 10:46 pm

I have been using my CPAP every night for three and a half months. Now, all of a sudden, I can't seem to breathe with it on. It started when I was on an a sudden and unplanned trip to my step dad' s funeral. I figured it was from being stuffed up from crying. But it hasn't gotten any better. I am still starting every night with it on and end up taking it off because I feel like I am suffocating. Anyone felt this way? What can I try? It could be all in my mind since my step dad was wearing a bipap when he died but I don't think that is it. Also, I have a constant runny nose and the pillows hurt because my nose is raw from the constant tissues. Any ideas on that one would help also.

1. Humidity. Too much?

2. Heat? If the water is full of hot air, its going to be very stuffy. I usually run "drive by" air, not heated

3. Cool the room itself WAY down.

4. Filter clogged?

5. Lost weight? Need a reduction in pressure?

6. Are you breathing from your sternum area or farther down for a deep breath?

7. Increased medications?

8. Food Allergies?

9. Asthma?

10. Sinus infection or lung fluid?

Im thinking of stuff that I would personally go over

11. Forgot to add Mask? New? Fewer c02 holes?

12.. Ramp change? Or need to change ramp?

Could be anxiety. Try focusing on something else. Put on the mask, turn on the machine and read a book or watch tv.

I would start by lowering the humidity for 1-2 nights and seeing if it helps. Was the funeral away from your home, possibly at a very different altitude? I wonder if that might have made a difference that started the trouble even if you're now back home, but still have leftover effects - but I wouldn't completely discount anxiety either, especially as your father did have similar issues. So sorry about your loss - fathers are so important!

Do you have the runny nose symptoms during the day or just at night?
During the day, do you compensate for the stuffy nose by mouth breathing?
It could be that your nasal passages are swollen and restricting the air flow so that the pressure that would be normal for you is temporarily not enough to insure a good air flow.

If that is the case, some sort of nasal decongestant might be the solution.
Is your machine a full data one? If so, do you have the software needed to look at the data?
You might be having additional OSA's because of the nasal problems so a comparison of before and after data would be helpful.

My sympathy on the loss of your father. Mine died 31 years ago and I still miss him.
