Going to the doc, new machine?

Post by catbirdgirl » Thu Aug 29, 2013 8:27 am

Hi there-

I have a perfectly good machine, but I might be due for a new one since it's been a few years. I have a Respironics APAP, I forget which model. My mask is a Mirage Activa LT, but I use the Trueblue headgear with it.

Any suggestions for masks or machines I should look at? Also, has anyone started making a machine with a built in battery backup yet? I have a sleep doc checkup today, so answers soon would be great.

Robin

If staying within the Respironics brand of machines the latest and greatest is the PR System One 60 series Auto CPAP (which would work like your old APAP) is worth considering.
Functions like your current machine but has a lot more bells and whistles and collects more extensive data. Software is easy to find and use.
It also has a heated hose option that greatly reduces chances of rain out and offers better humidity delivery in the process.

There isn't any APAP machine with built in battery use capability that I am aware of. There used to be the AEOImed travel machine that came with a built in battery..straight cpap machine...but that company has gone out of business.

Instead there are various battery packages that can be bought and used but be careful because not all battery packs will work with the 60 series machine. I have one that worked great on the 50 series machine but won't work at all on the 60 series machine.

Thanks Pugsy! I don't particularly care which line I get a machine from, but I'll ask about a System One if the bells and whistles are good.

You would probably also like the ResMed S9 AutoSet...it also has an optional heated hose.
I have had a chance to use both brands...it's a toss up really. When Respironics came out with the heated hose option the playing field was pretty much leveled.

Minor pros and cons with either brand (BTW the only 2 brands I would consider) but no deal breakers. Since you are used to the way that the Respironics machine does its business I would probably suggest staying with it. The S9 AutoSet is a great machine but it does do things a little differently and that different may be something that your body doesn't care for just because it is different. For newbies starting out with cpap therapy it probably doesn't make any difference but I think that for people who have used one machine (and done well) for years that maybe sticking with the same brand is advisable if at all possible unless you are the type of person who just loves to try out new stuff. I am that type of person and that's why I tried the S9...and why I say that it's a toss up.

I was about to ask the same question. My S8 is on the way out and insurance will pay for a new one in Oct. ( 5 yrs.). I am interested in the S9, but heard that the hose coming from the back is inconvenient.'d appreciate any feedback.

It's not that big of a deal having the hose come out from the back. The swivel hose connection on the top of the PR S1 humidifier is definitely a plus but the S9 hose coming out the rear isn't that big of a negative. I used my S9 VPAP for over a year and it was never an issue and I used the ClimateLine hose with it. Never tore the hose or anything like that.
This is one of those minor pros and cons I was talking about.

Also... use your old machine as a back-up.
