By the way, thankfully, the government decided I had the right to have fire protection because otherwise, the apartment building I live in would have burned down when a fire started in the basement and quickly spread three years ago.

Thanks, 49er!

And I'm glad you were protected when the need arose.

Best wishes, Nate

Where are you going with this kind of argument? Hmmm, let me help you:

What right does the government have to decide that you should have a drivers license or not?

What right does the government have to decide that you should have automobile insurance or not?

What right does the government have to decide that you should pay sales taxes or not?

What right does the government have to decide that you should pay income taxes or not?

What right does the government have to decide that you should wear seat belts or not?

What right does the government have to decide that you should have taxes deducted in advance from your paycheck or not?

What right does the government have to decide that you should have fluoride in your tap water or not?

What right does the government have to decide that you should have fire department protection or not?

What right does the government have to decide that you should have police protection or not?

There, do you feel better now?

Nate
Well technically, if the government followed the law of the land, The US Constitution, they don't have any of those rights.

You could continue your argument ... Hmmm, let me help you:

What right does the government have to violate the 4th amendment and spy on EVERYBODY?

What right does the government have to prohibit the people to peacfully assemble to protest their grievances? ( http://rt.com/usa/348-act-tresspass-buildings-437/ )

What right does the government have to rendition people to lawless third world countries for torture?

What right does the government have to assasisnate people, including American citizens, with drone strikes?

What right does the government have to bail out corporate campaign contributors with tax payer funds?

What right does the government have to accuse people of "terror" (whatever that is) without due process?

What right does the government have to declare war on another coountry without such a declaration by the US Congress?

What right does the government have to decide how much money a person can deposit or withdraw into/out of their own bank account?

What right does the government have to ban firearms and violate the 2nd amendment?

What right does the government have to force people to buy or prohbit them from buying anything?

There, do you feel you've arrived to your police state destiny now? ...

Thank you for helping me explain how far the government has overstepped it's bounds!

They so often take the Nancy Pelosi approach of "We know what is good for you" but for some reason they are above the law, and these laws don't apply to themselves!

If this really is a tax (which it is not) it would by law have to apply to EVRYONE! Including politicians and those on welfare! It does not, so no matter what the SC says it is a fine/punishment for not playing their game!

All you antigovernment folks, where is your outrage regarding forcing people to take psych meds or receive ECT against their will on an outpatient basis? People on under these orders have less rights than someone accused of a crime.

When all the controversy erupted following Newtown regarding stronger gun control laws, so many 2nd amendment folks wanted to round up all the "mentally ill" folks and lock them up and throw away the key. Never mind that according to statistics that a good majority of them are no more violent than regular folks. Anyway, there wasn't any concern for their constitutional rights.

49er

PS - It is my understanding that 45 states have laws that allow outpatient drugging against someone's will. Not sure about ECT

Nice way to qualify your answer. You might as well have said, "Some lunatics are incredibly violent sociopaths." Thanks for making my point. No intelligent people are advocating for locking up those with depression, OCD, or any other non-violent mental disorder.

The government owns the roads. They make the rules.

It shouldn't

The primary duty of government is to protect the people. This is really a silly point.

Yes. Much.

BTW, none of the things you bring up above involves the federal government FORCING you to buy a product.

The little secret that opponents of the ACA, like Mr. Rove, don't want sheeple to really understand is that no one is actually forcing anyone to buy anything.

You do not have to do a darned thing. None at all. You will have to pay a small increase in your income taxes if you choose not to, but that's your personal choice. You can choose to rent an apartment for the rest of your life, but if you do, you will not be able to avail yourself of the home mortgage deduction and will be left with no equity when you are old. You can likewise choose to put all your money under a mattress, but you will then not be able to take a tax deduction for annual contributions made to an IRA retirement fund. Your choice. The ultimate in personal liberty.

The fact is that the ACA likewise is the ultimate in conservative ideas, and was in fact, cooked up by the Heritage Foundation itself and touted by Bob Dole. The fact is that the country cannot continue with the current system where the poor (who have no choice) and the well off -- but young and healthy (the "free-riders"/free-loaders) don't get insurance and use emergency rooms as doctor's offices, or only get insurance later in life when they are sick and old, driving up the cost for every responsible person who pays his fair share into the system.

So you either repeal Ronald Regan's law, EMTALA, that allows anyone (even illegal aliens) the right to get care in an ER regardless of the ability to pay, and tell such people or their newborns to die on the sidewalk, or you force everyone, young and healthy included, to now pay their fair shares into the risk pool -- or, perhaps, bar them from ever getting insurance ever in their lives, unless they pay back a penalty for the years they chose not to, but financially could have.

Ideally, it would be far better to just have people pay into a Medicare for all system, rather than just allow less efficient private insurers to get the money, but that was the deal they were forced to take.

So no one is forcing you to buy anything. You just have to pay slightly higher income taxes if you don't -- to at least partially make up for the fact Ronald Regan gave you the right to go to an ER regardless of your ability to even pay for it, foisting that burden on the rest of us.

Heck ... they should repeal every single law passed by the US Congress since 1899.

Wow. You call US sheeple? I've said it before, and I'll say it again. If Obamacare is such a wonderful and beneficent program, why did the people who pulled every dirty trick to get it shoved down our throats make sure they exempted themselves from it? The same people who didn't bother reading it before passing it.

Now, please tell me how doubling my insurance rates constitutes "my fair share".

Probably because you belong to a union. You know, a labor organization a lot of Republicans equate with outright Communism. Maybe you should talk to your union bosses and ask them. After all, that's what you pay your dues for, to get the most protection and best deals for yourself possible. Most of the rest of the country don't get silver plated union benefits and wages, and have to pay full freight for any insurance whatsoever, or simply get none at all.

And frankly, because the Insurance Exchanges have not yet come out and most states other than California have not announced proposed rates from various insurance companies, no one knows exactly what the premium costs for individual buyers in different counties will be. And for those already with group coverage the ACA shouldn't affect radical changes on existing policies.

I have an existing individual policy with Blue Cross, and I haven't received any premium increase notice.

And no, US congressmen and even President Obama are going to be buying their insurance on the public exchanges. They specifically included themselves as part of the law.

Yea! I call you sheeple .... and I'll say it again. You sheeple are so gulible and so easy to manipulate.

You have no idea even about your own political understanding. Fact is that everyone practices communism and socialism because as primates, we ARE social organisms. Our genus, Homo, has been practicing communism and socialism for well over 2 million years ... what do you think the basic human family social structure is? Fact is that our government has not practiced true capitalism for over 150 years either ... our government has gradually morphed into "FASCISM" (corporate owned government).

Then the liberals rant about government being necessary to "protect" the public from the evil corporations and yet the fact remains that the safety of the people/sheeple is of the least concern of our government. What the hell do we need the FDA for if the people are no longer able to sue the drug comapanies or Monsanto and FDA is headed by corporate CEOs?
http://www.wakingtimes.com/2013/07/19/s ... -5-4-vote/

I recently tried to find a lawyer to help me recover an auto insurance claim that Farmers weasled their way out of paying. After talking to 3 different lawyers, all said the laws are not set up (was not worth it despite it being a slam dunk win for me) to take them to court because the amount of the claim (about $700) was less than the cost taking them to court. Sure it's not much but multiply that times hundreds if not thousands or even millions of people the insurance companies rip off on a regular basis.

Our government (whether DEM or GOP) has been hijacked by corporate greed and YOU sheeple just can't wake up to realize that.

SHEEPLE !!!

LMFAO. How did you come up with THAT piece of fiction? NO, I do not belong to a union. I would NEVER belong to a union. I wouldn't stand having dues taken from my pay to fund liberal politicians. I don't know where you came up with THAT conclusion. And you shouldn't assume that I'm a Republican because I'm conservative.
hyperlexis wrote:I have an existing individual policy with Blue Cross, and I haven't received any premium increase notice.
I don't know about YOUR insurance, but MY insurance company (Harvard Pilgrim) has told us that we can expect a 50% increase in premiums due to Obamacare regulations.
hyperlexis wrote:And frankly, because the Insurance Exchanges have not yet come out and most states other than California have not announced proposed rates from various insurance companies, no one knows exactly what the premium costs for individual buyers in different counties will be. Suddenly, we have to cover millions of people who won't be paying premiums, and somehow your liberal mathematics comes up with the fallacy that no one has to pay for it? And don't try to sell me some crap about how poor people are going to pay for it. They aren't.
hyperlexis wrote:And no, US congressmen and even President Obama are going to be buying their insurance on the public exchanges. They specifically included themselves as part of the law.
And they specifically EXCLUDED themselves from many of the more egregious portions of the bill. You don't get to cherry-pick your facts.

Look, I didn't join this board to argue politics, but all I need to know about this abortion of a law is what the government has done with Medicare and Social Security. Maybe YOU want the government to be in charge of YOUR healthcare, but I want my doctors to be in charge of mine.
