Today I was at the auto body shop. It's a relatively big shop and has been in business since the 1920s or something. It's one of Nationwide's 'certified' repair shops. While sitting there an insurance agent comes in and starts talking to the receptionist about retirement accounts for the business and work comp coverage. She tells him they have a retirement plan but the owner doesn't match the contributions. She then said he stopped offering health insurance a long time ago. Boss was out ...playing golf.
Well you know how much an auto body shop pulls in? A sh-tload of money, that's how much. One of the best rackets in town to be in. The scratches and miniscule ding on my door are going to set my insurance company back +$2,500, and me another $500. Every thing, down to the last millimeter of work, is billed. Even removing and replacing door handles is billed out.
And not a dime does the jerk owner spend to insure his workers! He's too busy on the golf course apparently!
Thank Gd for the ACA or Obamacare or whatever you want to call it! Because of it, those employees will finally regain their coverage.
Millions and millions of Americans work for employers like this one, who won't invest in the health of their workers who may even do backbreaking labor for them day in and day out. Or the other countless millions of Americans who are stuck in horrible, dead end jobs they hate, that crush the very spirit from their bodies, just because they so desperately need the health insurance that job gives them and their families.
Want to whine and cry because you may have to endure, gasp, a slightly longer wait at the doctor, or some other non-life threatening inconvenience? Well you get no pity from me.
For the millions and millions of Americans who will now finally be able to have health insurance, this new law will be a life saver and finally give them the ability to tell bosses like the one at that body shop that goodbye, they are going to go and find themselves a better job! -- And perhaps that's why some employers don't like it and are now bitching about it. Because they know it will finally unshackle their workers from their desks.

I believe that all people are created equal. I don't think any race or nationality is superior. I don't agree with everything that goes on in my country but I still love it. I would expect everyone else to feel the same way about their country. I love my family but I don't agree with everything all of my family members do. I shouldn't have made any comments but I have just seen so many negative comments about American people. Not all of them were on this thread. I don't think Canadians are jealous of us at all. I didn't mean to start a war with Canada.

Re: Obamacare Explained in One Sentence
Our daughter nearly died almost two years ago from a bowel obstruction. She had just turned 23 at the time, was a student, and if she hadn't been on my husband's health insurance plan (thanks to Obamacare), I honestly think she would not have received the treatment she did and probably would have died. She was diagnosed with Crohn's disease and since that time has had repeated MRI's, CT scans, blood work, doctor appointments, etc.. We would have been ruined financially without Obamacare. She has been unable to return to school or work and has just now reached remission, but has to take 23 pills a day to maintain it, including a chemotherapy drug that makes her sick. With the changes in the healthcare law on October 1st, we know that when she turns 26 and is no longer insured with us that she will be able to get insurance in the same risk pool as everyone else and not be penalized for her autoimmune disease. I, for one, am very grateful for the changes.

One sentance?
How about one word?
Stupid!
Or ... Unconstitutional.
Or ... Socialism!
America was founded on the principal of not being forced by threat of imprisonment, for the welfare of others. Many people are willing to help others who are in need (It's called charity) but when the government sticks its nose where it does not belong, and forces its citizens against their will, that is wrong.
If somebody can't/won't afford ins, they are forced to pay the penalty, if they can't/won't pay the penalty, they will end up in jail!

Which part? The Supreme Court said the Individual Mandate was a constitutional exercise of the tax power. They also said that the requirements on the States to accept new Medicaid enrollees were unconstitutional. Try again after two of the current Court retire.

You're free to commit an act of Civil Disobedience if you feel that strongly about it.

That's what the subsidies are for.

That's called Civil Disobedience (or tax evasion). There are dozens of (IMHO) misled dolts every year who choose to follow the get-rich-quick con-man du jour.
The only legal way to get out of paying taxes in America is to be rich enough to afford a lobbiest and a fleet of tax lawyers.

Re: Obamacare Explained in One Sentence
Keep up the arguing folks. This is just what "the powers that be", and I'm referring to both sides, wants. They're perfectly happy to collect they're fat paychecks, benefits, and payoffs from their corporate puppetiers and let you sink into the muck. Washington is nothing but a comfortable, self involved bubble of millionaires who do nothing for average Americans and then go on to some lobbiest gig where they spend the rest of their time doing nothing more than arguing for their own interests. We need to stop this petty fighting among ourselves and pay attention to what is really going on.
Peace!

They even keep up closely with our politics and economy. They are fascinated but still jealous.
What I do find interesting is how so many people here were commenting on the US elections and how everyone has this huge opinion on US politics when they have enough problems here to keep you going for a lifetime. They concern themselves with US politics quite a bit. On their Veterans Day I saw people commenting on US politics but ignoring their own Veterans. I guess it would be easy to say fix your own problems before you go poking your nose into another country's problems, but it's not restricted to Canadians.
Is the "world laughing at" the United States? Maybe, but they're also laughing at Quebec for Pastagate;)
Re: Obamacare Explained in One Sentence
I can tell you my husband is Canadian and jealous of the things Americans have access to but he still loves his country. I myself am jealous of a lot of countries for many reasons (New Zealand. Where are you going to find New Zealand anywhere else? but that doesn't equal not loving my own country (The United States of America) with all its "character flaws".Stormynights wrote:I believe that all people are created equal. But if you're going to say that my country is "stupid" or say that the world is "laughing at" the entire country because it can't provide universal health care (because it's "easy" to do so), then we're going to have some words, you and me.
Re: Obamacare Explained in One Sentence
I am very glad that your daughter received the care she needed; that's how it's supposed to be. I think that for some, Obamacare will be very helpful. For others, not so much. My mom for instance is near 80 and will have to struggle more under Obamacare (won't get into details but there it is.) My sister on the other hand will probably benefit. I would like to see a plan where all can benefit and no group is left with more problems. I'd also like Congress to have to take part in it as they think it's a great answer for the common people but have mysteriously exempted themselves.KimberlyM wrote:Our daughter nearly died almost two years ago from a bowel obstruction. Re: Obamacare Explained in One Sentence
Oboama care has nothing to do with her treatment, thank your husband for working to provide your health care, something over 52 % of voters aren't willing to do. Hopefully your daughter will become a productive member of the workforce like your husband, and pull her own weight trying to upright this sinking ship, the U.S. A..... We need the newer generations to keep pulling the wagon, our older generation has done it's time in the yoke and have been put out to pasture.KimberlyM wrote:Our daughter nearly died almost two years ago from a bowel obstruction. Even a balloon will explode without being poked, if more air keeps being pumped in it. As it now stands, we are approaching more people in the U.S. taking from the government pool than puting into it, add in coprerate profits going untaxed into offshore accounts. That time is very close, if not here! Jim
