Quick question about mask fit

Post by newbie06 » Wed Jun 07, 2006 1:22 pm

I'm also a newbie and am glad I found this place. I have what I'm guessing is a dumb question (I'm sure it's been talked about before, but I couldn't find anything). I'm still getting used to the mask, but what I've found over the last week is that my mask really hurts my face when I wear it unless I loosen it to the point where it's leaking a bit. So I'm in this gray area where if I keep it tight enough for a seal, I'm restless during the night and prone to taking it off a 3 or 4 a.m. because my face is killing me, but if I loosen it, it leaks a bit but I'm sleeping much better. And I do feel better when I wake up, so it definitely seems to be working even with the leakage. Has anyone else had this problem? Anyone see any reason to ratchet the straps and endure the pain? TIA

Give more information as to what kind of mask you are using and you will get some comments.

Hi. If you will go into your profile and complete the equipment section at the bottom, including the mask portion, we can help you better.

The main thing is you 're sleeping better, and feeling better - which probably indicates that the leaks aren't that bad.

Now, if you do tell us which kind of mask you're using, you're bound to get tips from those who have been using it longer, and have found out how make it work.

If those tips help - great. If they don't: well, masks are like shoes. One kind does not necessarily fit everyone, maybe when some of the newness has worn off you'll want to try another mask.

Don't hesitate to ask anything - that's the way we all learn.
Welcome, and good luck.
O.

You'd think I would have figured this out by now. Here's what's on my delivery sheet:
Comfort Gel Headgear, Respironics
Resmed Elite S8 w/ heated humidifier

Thanks Linda for the profile instruction. Now I get what that section was for in the sign-up.

The Confort Gel was the first mask I tried and I now know that it's not a very good mask for most of us. Like you, I had to tighten it way down to get it to stop leaking. If you can, I highly reccommend that you try the Activa. IMHO, it's the best nasal mask out there.
