Fisher&Paykel Oracle 452

Post by Pooh105 » Wed Jun 07, 2006 8:17 am

Good Morning All,

Has anyone had experience with the Oracle 452? Right now I am using a ComfortFull 2 full face mask. This mask seems to leak on a constant basis everytime I roll onto my side. As well as the Oracle 452 I am also considering the FlexiFit 431. Any opinions anyone?

Thanks

I use the Comfort full no 2, can't see any change between the old and the 2, in the picture they look the same? I also use the F & P 431, I like it better it's more comfortable but it seems to raise my AHI a little more, So I jump back and forth, this week it's the 431.

It's funny as you change from one to the other sometimes the reason you changed from the old mask in the first place seems to get better. Jim

Using the Oracle 452

I'm using the Oracle mask and have been for almost 18 months. I love it. It's been far better for me than an over the nose mask. I've seen a lot of criticisms here about it but my experience has been 180 degrees different.

I've never had mouth sores, however, it comes with two different size bite molds, make sure you use the most comfortable one.

The mask seals from inside your mouth, fitting between your teeth and lips. The flap on the outside pulls the inside bite piece snug up against your lips to create the seal of the mask. There is a grey ring you can use to adjust the tension to get the best blend of seal and comfort. The ring uses simple screw threads, so it's infinitely adjustable.

I made the mistake of trying to wear the mask without the behind the head strap (just a single strap BTW, not a whole head harness), which may be possible for some people, but when my mouth relaxed the mask would get loose and to tighten it enough to keep it in my mouth made it uncomfortable. When I finally relented and used the strap I could loosen it and it was really comfortable.

The only down side is that you MUST have a heated humidifier and your mouth will still dry out.

I can't tell you how comfortable it is to just have a single strap around my head and a single tube that doesn't have to go over my head to manage in the night. I usually sleep with the tube under my arm and under the covers so when I roll over in the night I can just lift the tube at the same time I lift the covers. It's like it's not even there.

The only other "weird" thing is that you most probably have to use the enclosed nose plugs. I can't imagine being able to keep my sinuses closed while asleep.

The nose plugs were my only problem with the Oracle. I could handle it in my mouth okay but even the largest plugs kept blowing out my nose. Seems that if your nostrils aren't bone dry it provides enough lubrication to launch them. did try using swimmer's nose plugs but the pinching bothered me more than using a regular nasal mask did.

The new Hybrid coming out might be the answer. it combines an oral mask with nasal pillows. Looking forward to trying.
