Full mask or Nasal mask for heart patients?

Post by tonyfirefox99 » Sat Jul 13, 2013 6:49 pm

Hi everyone
I've been using a nasal mask for the past year or so, prior to that i was on full mask for two years.
I recently had two stents put in. I'm worried that a nasal mask can be putting the heart under stress especially when there is a congestion.
Any thoughts.

Thanks

I am post triple bypass and stents and the sleep technician was aware of that when he did my study. he asked me about it. i was given a nasal mask which is working well for me. i am a total newbie but i would think that if your AHI is under 5 that your airway obstruction has been alleviated, so no strain on the heart. i sure hope you dont get a different answer, because there is no way I would be able to tolerate a full face mask due to claustrophobia.

Get a full face mask for those nights when there is a lot of congestion. I have one I only use when I have a cold.

I had one stent and then later a double bypass. In both cases the doctors demanded a nasal mask. I had a full face mask and was told no to it's usage. They said even with leakage I was getting good enough therapy. FFM was to great of a chance of throwing up and into the mask. They told me after a period (don't remember the time frame) I could go back to the FFM if I wanted to.

Thanks for the replies.
I feel FFM will get you breathing easier every time where a nasal mask at times feels like your waiting for air to come through, that alone can put a bit of stress on the heart that heart patients can do without.

what you guys think

Comment,

I keep reading in a 2011 medical report from the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine that patients with cardiac problems are candidates for ASV machines, and, manufacturers of ASV machines recommend that ASV {method} be implemented preferentially with full face masks (and that nasal pillows styles be avoided). But still, ASV titrations were performed also with a few chamber style nasal masks that provided better fit (with chin straps) .

p.s. I am not sure about the reasons for those ASV machines mfgs preferring the FF masks.

Here is the ResMed Mask/Device Compatibility List:

http://www.resmed.com/assets/documents/ ... er_eng.pdf

Note that their latest model ASV, the VPAP™ Adapt (S9 ASV), is approved for FFM, Nasal Mask and Nasal Pillows. Some earlier models of ASV may not be.

In my case, on my third sleep study with the Tx set for ASV mode, I was fitted with nasal pillows during the lab titration; and outfitted with a Swift FX with the issuance of my machine.

You are correct that in earlier studies and with earlier ASV machines, they did require a FFM.

Best wishes, Nate
