OT? Sudden spontaneous deep breaths while awake??

Post by jjlady » Tue Jul 09, 2013 9:19 pm

Not sure if this is Off Topic???

Does anyone ever notice what I call spontaneous or reflex type breaths WHILE AWAKE (I am talking about during the day not in bed)? I also notice these while on my CPAP sometimes but am more concerned about them while awake and moving about. I am not sure if it is something I need to have checked. Just curious if anyone else has this?? It feels like an unplanned sudden very fast deep breath, not startling or scary in any way.

I think those may be more anxiety related, maybe a new consciousness of breathing, but it would be a good idea to check them with your doctor. It's so hard from here to really know how many you have, when you have them, what's been happening, etc. etc. let alone to guess about them. Please don't take my vague guess as being worth much - you may in fact need more 02 at times, whatever the reason is - and it doesn't need to be related to OSA or Cpap.

What you describe sounds like what I used to do early in my CPAP treatment. I started to say it just went away over time, but thought about what Julie said and remembered I was also diagnosed and treated for a respiratory issue during the same time frame, so I can't say for sure it just went away.

My daughter (adult) does this all the time. She says it is as though she forgets to breathe, and suddenly takes a deep breath to compensate.

Personally I would have her do a sleep study just because it sounds like the same issue someone with central apneas might have, and she doesn't sleep well.

But she has other reasons in mind for not sleeping well (I won't iterate), and has no interest in a sleep study yet. She's also not that tired while awake, so I don't push it.

I do this all day.

I too have noticed in the last few months that it seems I just forget to breathe ... After a couple of deep breaths, I'm ok ... Until it happens again! 3-10 times a day!

I'm going in for another sleep study ... With a different lab, and Dr ... It is one of the things I'm gonna bring up! I do tend to have centrals recorded in the night ... Usually half of my ahi is centrals! My ahi varies from 4-12 ...

I do have central sleep apnea. I am on an auto ASV. I have been on this one about 6 months or so BUT...I don't use it much anymore, I try every night, if I fall asleep with it on, I leave it on until I wake up and can't get back to sleep (usually 3-4 hrs), then sleep rest of night without it.

If I don't fall asleep I just take it off and sleep the night without it, I have not been tired during the day since last October. I usually get 3-4 hrs a nite on it, but one night I got 6 hours hard sleep and was exhausted the next day. My AHI is still in the 10-12 range...never have been able to get it down, went from straight 15 pressure to bi-level to auto, had at least 3 sleep studies in 3 months and never was able to get it under control. But basically I don't want to go back to doc because he will probably recommend anpther sleep study and I refuse it do it......it is torture for me!!! I toss and turn a lot and I feel very restrained with the sleep study.
