S9 VPAP Auto Question
S9 VPAP Auto Question
Just replaced the S8 VPAP Auto with the S9.On the first night of use I checked the results screen and realized the exhale and inhale pressures were running the same (no difference in the pressures).
When I asked the Respiratory Tech about this I was told that everything was fine and that they were only the same now because I was awake but if I were asleep and needed treatment for an apnea they would be different.
I told her that with my S8, there was a setting called Pressure Support (PS) and this was set at 4.0 and as a result, the exhale pressure always ran 4.0 cm less than the inhale pressures. Also, the PS setting on the new machine was set at 0.0 and asked her if this was the reason there was no differential between the inhale and exhale pressures on the new machine. She responded that the PS was only required if you needed additional pressure support.
Personally I think she is incorrect and that the PS setting determines the differential but I'm not the expert.
Is there anyone out there that can tell me the function of the PS setting on the S9 unit and whether it needs to be set in order to take advantage of the BiPap functionality?
Thanks,
Sam_01

Re: S9 VPAP Auto Question
Sam you are correct. Your PS is set at 0.0 so your EPAPand IPAP will always be the same even if they increase or decrease. And yes on our machine The PS sets pressure support at a fixed number which will be the same even as EPAP and IPAP auto adjust during the night. If PS is set at 3, the EPAP/IPAP difference will always be 3 between EPAP and IPAP.
Do you have the clinical manual for your S9 VPAP auto? Do you need one?

Kaiasgram,
Thaks for the very concise response.
No, I do not have the clinical manual and yes, I would love to have one.

Re: S9 VPAP Auto Question
How can an RT be so stupid? They don't even understand the machines their companies are selling.

Re: S9 VPAP Auto Question
You should think about having a discussion with whomever employs this RT.
Doctors are prescribing auto bilevel machines and her lack of knowledge is turning them into APAPs.
She needs either education or a new career.

Re: S9 VPAP Auto Question
It amazes me that this RT had all the quick answers even though all wrong! I wonder if there is any training involved at these DME's? I wish she had said she didn't know the answers but would find someone who could help. Wishful thinking!Sam_01 wrote:Just replaced the S8 VPAP Auto with the S9.On the first night of use I checked the results screen and realized the exhale and inhale pressures were running the same (no difference in the pressures).

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.
Re: S9 VPAP Auto Question
Sorry, I forgot to say that you're correct about the PS. Let's say your Epap is 10 with PS=4,then your Ipap will be 14. If your Ipap is 16 and your Epap increases to 11 then your Ipap increases to 15, 12 increases Ipap to 16, always difference of 4. Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi Alan -- Can you clarify: Your icon shows a ResMed humidifier but you identified you have a Respironics bipap machine. Which clinician manual do you need?alancalan wrote:Kaiasgram,

Re: S9 VPAP Auto Question
In this thread Alan indicates that he is looking for the S9 Clinical Manual.

I sent him the link for SleepyHead (I think it's what he wants), but do not have the S9 info.

Alan, I sent you a private message with the link you need to access the clinician manual. You need to do a bit of scrolling down that page but you'll find what you need.
