mouth taping...funny story

Post by tcher49 » Mon Jun 05, 2006 8:12 pm

First of all, let me say that his forum has been invaluable to me as a newbie to this technology. I have been using the machine for about 6 weeks now and it's still hit or miss.

I am a mouth breather, and from what I read on the forum I went out and bought tape, which seemed to help for a while. But then I blew the tape off, or drooled on it until it fell off! I then read about Poligrip, and went to the pharmacy the other day to purchase some. But I bought the adhesive, not the strips.Long story short, Friday night I put on the adhesive, taped my mouth, attached the mask and tried to sleep. The phone rang at 8am, and after throwing the mask off, I picked up the receiver and said "MMMMMPPPPHHH". I ripped off the tape and said "MMMMMMMMMPHHHHHHHH"...my lips were glued shut! I mean SHUT! It was my daughter-in-law on the phone, and she thought I was dying!! I ripped my lips open and said "Wait, wait, my mouth was glued shut!!" Dead silence on the other end of the phone.

Overall, these last weeks have been a frustrating learning experience. I still struggle with the comfort of the mask, but I am sleeeping soundly and feel better...hardly ever nap anymore, and definitely have more energy. Now if they'd invent a CPAP that burns fat while you sleeep.......!

You should check into getting a full face mask like mine. I'm a mouth breather because of congestion and allergies. I've never had a nose mask, but I can't imagine going through all of the machinations that people describe here to seal their mouth, when they could just get a face mask!

tcher49- Thanks for your story...I almost fell off my chair laughing. I can totally relate.
I always seem to think of something to tell my husband, after the Poligrip strip is in place! I've now had to add pen/paper at my bedside. I've tried the full face mask, but felt more claustrophobic than just using the nasal pillows.

Tom, don't knock it unless you've tried it. (Said nicely).

I've had congestion and sinus problems my whole life, and never would have thought I would be able to use a nasal mask or pillows. I started off with nasal pillows (prongs actually), and fully expected that I would need to switch to a full face mask.

Didn't happen.

My sinuses and congestion clear up within 3 or 4 minutes after putting on my Aura and start my humidifier (setting of only 1). I don't even have to do the "irrigation" routine that many voluntarily do so they can use the pillows.

I do plan on getting a full face mask in August, but only for when I have a headcold.

Tom,
I'm glad you get along with your UMFF. Do you want another one (cheap),
size small regular?

I keep trying, but I can not find a full-face mask I can seal on my face...
..maybe the hybrid?...we will see...
