John, your post has touched me deeply and I really admire your dedication to your sister. I know all too well how all consuming it is to be a caregiver for a loved one. I can't give any advice about the mask issue but hopefully it is just a temporary situation. We lost our beloved 13yo German Shepard many years ago and about a year later when I thought I had recovered from her loss, I found her ball behind the sofa and I cried for about 3hrs. Please know that you have friends here.

Hi John. I like Stormynight's idea for a new bed for your sister. The brand name is Sleep Number. The air mattress firmness can be changed easily and often depending on what's most comfortable in different sleep positions or preferences with a remote control. I also use an adjustable base beneath the mattress which can also be adjusted quickly with the use of another remote to sit up in bed at any preferred angle, to raise the head of the bed or the legs end of the bed, etc. You can visit a Sleep Number store and with the guidance of the sales people get a full review and try it out.

My heart also goes out to you about your dog. We have three cats. The Siamese is now 14. Already I'm dreading about when she passes. Our pets add so much warmth, friendship and love to our lives. We understand what you're going through. What a beautiful bond you had. Best wishes, man.

Although the sleep number is nice it isn't the one I was talking about. The one I was talking about the pressure is constantly changing. The pressure sores can't heal unless the pressure is relieved on those sore spots. Mom had a hospital bed and the mattress fit on that.

A year ago, I too lost a beloved pet . I cried for 3 weeks straight because I loved him like my child. My heart goes out to you. Time does make the loss bearable but you never forget how much they meant to you. I ran across this a few days ago and thought how very true it was:

The one absolutely unselfish friend
That a man can have
In this selfish world,
The one that never deserts him,
The one that never proves ungrateful
Or treacherous, is his dog…
He will kiss the hand that has
No food to offer…
When all other friends desert, he remains.
George G. Vest: Speech U.S. Senate, 1884

I admire you for the loving care you give your sister. What a kind heart you have. Know that a lot of us here grieve with you for your loss.

God Bless

These mattresses are used in hospitals and rehabs. It had to be prescribed by our Drs in both settings. I think it had to be Medicare approved(or some kind of approval, not sure). Can you check with her insurance or Dr to see if they can order a "floating" mattress? Mike had extensive hip surgery and this mattress was his life saver. I tried to get one for home use but it was denied because his medical condition at the time of discharge did not meet the requirements as his open wound was healing. Not sure of the exact wording of the denial. But it's worth a try in your sister's case.
