teeth guard question

Post by msla » Mon Jun 24, 2013 8:51 am

I saw an ad for sports teeth and lip guards and was wondering if they would help me, a mouth breather, when combined with a chinstrap? Something to bite on and push my lips against. Has anybody tried this?

I have tried JUST the sports guard in the hopes it's presence would make me keep my mouth closed. By itself, it did not work for me.

The chinstrap (withOUT the sports guard) works for me, so I have never tried them together.

msla,
I had a prescribed mouthguard for teeth gringing- bruxism- before CPAP. I think it does help wearing the mouth guard to keep my mouth shut but no evidence to support it. I find the chinguard to be useless. How large a leak are you showing, and with which mask?

I'm curious if you are a mouth "leaker" or a mouth "breather". Under either condition, full face masks really are more comfortable and better-suited.

As a mouth leaker, when I use a full-face mask that is properly seated, it actually makes it easier to breathe through my nose. Because the pressure in my mouth is equalized to the pressure in my nose, I no longer leak through my mouth.

Is there any reason why you won't consider a full face mask?

Vanity, beard, I do have a full face mask. I do not like breathing through my mouth with the accompanying dry mouth.

Well, it's good to have priorities, eh? I have a beard. I can't do the nasal masks because they give me dry mouth. Full-face masks, even though they cover my mouth, do not encourage mouth breathing, at least for me. I use a pap-cap to keep the mask properly seated. My mouth stays closed. Because the pressure is equal between nose and mouth, I end up breathing through my nose, just as if I weren't wearing a mask. Hence, no dry mouth.

I also don't end up with clamp-mouth, where my mouth and jaw muscles are tight in the morning from attempting to purse my lips closed all night like I do with the nasal mask.

Occasionally, when I travel, I use the Hybrid, which comes with nasal prongs and is relatively comfortable for short naps in the car. It's less frightening to other passers-by than fully donned pap-cap and full-face mask, so that's a nod to vanity too, I guess.

Actually I am doing OK with my Opus 360. The last 12 months are 100% of nights average of 8.15 hours, AHI of 1.1, and median leak of 0.0. I just wondered about the mouth guards for athletics.
