Newbie switched to WISP: 1st night results.

I have been on CPAP since the beginning of the month, have had great numbers, but was having very poor quality sleep. I was finally diagnosed with severe dry eyes which, as it turned out, were awakening me every two hours. With that resolved and my sleep quality improved, I finally began to notice that although my leak numbers were good, leaks were regularly disturbing my sleep. I had been fitted with small pillows for my sleep study, but my DME fit me with mediums. So I switched to small for a few nights. I went back to my DME and said that I though the mediums were too big and the smalls were too small. After trying both with the CPAP machine, the tech agreed. He wanted me to use a Mirage FX. I wanted to try the WISP. The Mirage leaked, even after much adjustment, but the WISP didn't. Last night was my first night with the WISP. Here are my readings from the last 30 days:

I had two hypopneas last night and that is all!

I only lasted five hours because my nose stuffed up, but what a great night while it lasted.

I forgot to mention that the DME tech scolded me for suffering with an ill-fitting mask for a month! They aren't all bad...

Maybe he's just poorly informed.

I picked up mine from a little local DME on April 12, and others on cpaptalk had already been reporting using theirs long before then.

It might just be that where you are located that he/she hasn't been able to get it supplied to them yet. If I were you I would let them know that its available and insist that its the mask you want to try.

I got one from our hosts about 2 months ago.
Availability has been very slow getting up to speed.
They are made in China; maybe a boat had Somalians on board.

On the first release of the Wisps several months ago, the plastic side clips on the fabric headgear versions were breaking after a month or two. Lot's of people sent them back to ResMed and demanded replacements. Supposedly Resmed fixed the new version, plus I haven't had any problems with mine. Possibly, that could be what your DME was talking about. They were as rare as hen's teeth for about a month. EDIT: CF is correct, Wisp is a PR product not a ResMed product as I stated above. Yes, I agree, there are too many confusing product names with weird extensions that change the entire nature of the device or mask.

Wisp is a Respironics mask, but Resmed is rolling out a Swift FX Nano,
sort of a hybrid between their competitor's Wisp and their own Swift FX nasal pillow mask.
Why, why are so many names so similar?

I am definitely doing better with the WISP than with the Swift FX. The good news: I don't awaken on the rare occasions when the WISP leaks, as it self-corrects somehow. The bad news: I don't awaken when the WISP leaks, so my bloodshot eyes are back.

FYI: I am a side or half stomach/half side sleeper and sleep with a Tempur-Pedic medium neck pillow.

My AHI has been below 1 every night the four nights I have used the WISP. Looking at my flattened respiration episodes, I am guessing that I am getting some deep sleep. Yes? But I think my sleep deficit is so deep that it is going to take me awhile to crawl out of the hole...I am still very tired.

I am wakening at least once a night. Then everything seems to be wrong...I am too hot, I am too cold, I can't get the mask seated, the pillow is not right, the hose is in the way, the air is blowing on me, etc. So I just get up for 30 and then try again.

I would certainly suggest the WISP as an option for people who are struggling with the fit of a pillow mask. I am amazed at the way that it "gloms" onto my face.

P.S. I hated the clips and took them out immediately. Since the straps are supposed to be loose, I can just slip the mask off over my head.

I had one of the original WISPs that broke at the clip and opted for the silicone replacement instead of waiting for the new one. Now that it has gotten warmer it tends to be a little sweaty so i'm looking for a little barrier. But i love my WISP, my DME actually recommended it.
