Provent

Post by terence999 » Mon May 27, 2013 5:50 pm

Has anyone used those nose patches by Provent? They are an alternative to the cpap. My doctor says they are not the gold standard (cpap), but better than nothing. I have deviated septum so they don't work well for me.

I have been wondering how you were doing. Is it getting any better?

I am curious about these, too. I e-mailed my doctor today and asked if I could try them. She said no - that they are only for mild cases of sleep apnea. Well, I have been at this for TWO YEARS and CPAP simply doesn't work for me. She still wants me to keep at it even though I can only tolerate it for 2-3 hours a night. I don't see how the Provent can be any worse than that. I am going to see if my pulmonologist will prescribe it for me. To hell with this so called sleep expert I have been driving four hours to Dallas to see.

Ive tried them and I wouldnt say they are for mild SA! In my opinion they create so much pressure much more than what I feel with my pap. Havent got through a night wearing them they create so much pressure and then give me a headache to the point where I rip them off. I can see how they can be good for travel if you can get use to them. I dont think they are covered by insurance and cost about a few bucks a pair. But like how one mask can be good for someone but not someone else, you have to try it to know for sure. I think they sell sample packs of like 10 pairs.

Terrance, I have not tried it since I am a mouth breather. Wish it was an option for me.

Cherylann, words fail me regarding your doctor being unwilling to prescribe it for you. I hope you have better luck getting your pulmonologist to prescribe the Provent.

I've been looking for a Canadian pharmacy that has it. Anyone know of one?

I just received the results of my sleep study, and my OSA is worse than it was 18 years ago when I had my first study. I tried CPAP then, and I couldn't stand it, so for years I've used nothing. I have considered surgery (Pillar Procedure, Palate Coblation), but before I try anything that radical, I'm going to try the Provent nasal valves. My doctor recommended them, and I'm meeting with him next week to get a "starter kit". I'll let you know how they work for me. Also, for your information, I pulled up "The Snoring Center" website in Dallas, and ever since then I've had their ads popup on my computer, and I can't get rid of them.
