Computer Crashed & Burned - Need Some Help Resintalling.
On Friday, my computer crashed, or so we thought. Hubbs bought me a new laptop. Having difficulty installing SleepyHead. I download from your link Pugsy.
So I'm trying it again.

New PC or MAC? I believe there is a difference in setting up SH on a MAC, but not sure.

PC, Windows 8. Windows definitely has a learning curve.

My advise would be to look into downgrading your computer to Windows 7. If you have been on any Windows computer prior to Windows 7 the interface will seem natural. Windows 8 has been called a disappointment by professionals and will probably never see the install base of Windows 7 which is still growing. It will be much easier to get support and software that runs on Windows 7 machines.
I am a recent convert after many years of using windows and recently bought a Mac. I must admit it is wonderful I've loaded Windows 7 on it as a virtual machine through Parallels and can use any Windows software in addition to Mac software. Last Apple computer I had was an Apple II.

I am not sure about Sleepyhead but the installer in Windows 8 does not seem to like many programs. I know Encore Basic will not install on Win 8 but if you can install it on a Win 7 machine and copy it to Windows 8 it would run it just won't install. I am hoping to stay around long enough to bypass Win 8.

I'll talk to my husband about it. Thank you. In fact, I can't even get iTunes to download.
I'm just glad it isn't me doing something wrong.

Not having any problems with Windows 8...and didn't have any with Windows 7. I've installed and updated iTunes a few times on Windows 8 now, and I do the same reduced iTunes install that I did on Windows 7 to avoid having Bonjour, etc. running. If you want to do the reduced iTunes install, just download iTunes, use free 7-zip to extract the pieces, and install only the pieces that you need. Makes iTunes a lot more lightweight. Or you can install the full, ginormous iTunes on Windows 8, and that works as well.Starlette wrote:I'll talk to my husband about it. Thank you. In fact, I can't even get iTunes to download.

I haven't tried to install Sleepy Head on Windows 8 since I use ResScan, but I'm sure that lots of people here have done that already and can offer more help than "go back to Windows 7" *smile*. Going back to Windows 7 by re-installing your computer is one answer, but that's time consuming, and you have to acquire Windows 7 (cost money, too). And backups are always really important if you intend to re-install your OS, of course.
First thing I'd do is check and see if there's a version of Sleepy Head that others have installed on Windows 8, and go from that one. I'll look into it and tell you what I find.
Update: Just installed SleepyHead v0.9.3 (beta) on the Windows 8 system that I'm using right now. I used the newest version that Pugsy's Sleepy Head URL points to, and it downloaded and installed fine, and runs well. Same as it did on Windows 7 when I installed it there. I didn't import any data, but I'm pretty sure that will also work.
One thing, be sure you're running as adminstrator when you run the setup.exe file, or you won't be able to install it, although you should be able to download it anyways. If you ended up with it partially installed because you aborted out of the installation or something like that, you should be able to use System Restore to take your system back to the state it was in before you did the installation.
I'm real curious as to which version the OP downloaded, and exactly what you did to install it, and what you saw when you tried, I'd like to try to be more helpful?

If you are interested in getting your computer to look like Windows 7 (start button, start menu, desktop, etc.), send me a private message.Starlette wrote:He installed it easy peasy, so I'm a happy camper now *shrugs*

There's a couple of small programs that I use, too. Start8 from Stardock gives you back the "Start" button on the desktop, and costs $5. This one makes the desktop learning curve very quick *smile*, and has no effect on the overall touch features.
I also use a free app, Skip Metro Suite, which lets me boot directly to the desktop. So you turn on your computer, and instead of booting to the touch screen "Start" screen, it boots directly to the desktop. You may or may not want this one, but I have no touch features on my desktop so it's fine with me to boot directly to the Windows 8 desktop, bypassing the "Start" screen. It also doesn't have any effect on the touch features of Windows 8, other than bypassing the "Start" screen.
There are other programs that do these same things, these are just two that have worked well for me, and get used on my desktop computer all the time.
On the other hand, if you still want to go to the Start screen, move the Windows 8 Desktop tile on the start screen to the top tile on the first column on the left, and you can get to the desktop then by just hitting "enter" when you're on the "Start" screen, you don't need to even click (or touch) the Desktop tile.
Also, Windows 8.1 (Blue), coming out in a few months, is rumored to be restoring the classic Windows desktop features as well. We'll see about that as it gets closer *smile*.
