Slight Headache in morning Still tired afternoon

Post by johnmtaylor » Wed May 08, 2013 11:45 am

14th day on Bipap.

I am experiencing a slight headache in the AM and still tired after lunch.
Just had an Oximeter test and doctor review said I looked better. (no numbers)

My 7 day averages from Sleepyhead:

AHI 9.75
Flow limit index .29
Hours per night 6.2
Min EPAP 6
95% EPAP 11.2
Max IPAP 18.2
95% IPAP 15.4
Avg total leaks 41 ( Sleepmapper app shows 100% compliance)
95% total leaks 64

Realized I hadn't asked a question...

Are the headaches normal or should I ask for adjustment with the results posted

I had mild headaches in the AM for the initial few weeks. 2 aspirins did the trick for me. As my body got acclimated to using the machine, they went away completely

after 2 nights, my middle of the night need for bathroom runs was completely gone, but it took almost 3 months before the afternoon tiredness was gone.

There is a lot of talk about sleep debt being the cause of some of it.... do a search in the forum for it

Your AHI still isn't great but....

Using SH what is the average duration of the events (you have to do this manually but the time of each event is listed under EVENTS)?

What is the distribution of events? Are they evenly spaced or or clumped in bunches?

6.2 hours isn't a lot of sleep. Are you getting up on your own or by an alarm clock?

Last night 93 events with 7:06 duration
Divide by 93 = approximately 4.5 seconds.

Cluster of centrals in first hour then random Hypop through night.

BiPap...ASV BiPap so a history of centrals.
It can take weeks and months for the ASV machines to work their magic so don't get all gung ho and start making changes willy nilly. You will have to use more patience than those of us with run of the mill plain jane OSA.

When evaluating AHI always include a breakdown as to each event category. If possible include an image of your detailed report so we can see what you are seeing.

Headaches....not all headaches are related to sleep apnea and/or oxygen levels. Wish it were that easy. My neck reminds me of that fact every time it rains or I sleep in a weird position and neck gets in a bind.

Sleeping 6 hours a night....while some people feel well rested after such a short period of time most people are going to need more or they are likely to hit a wall in the afternoon. Need more hours of sleep on a consistent basis and yes, I know easier said than done.

2 weeks is a relatively short period of time to be on cpap therapy and especially short for being on ASV therapy.
The body pretty much has to relearn how to breath and it isn't a habit that comes easily.

Do you have a scheduled follow up visit? If not make one so that you can include your medical care team in your questions and concerns. Depending on the AHI breakdown on your reports they may or may not want to make any changes right away but do include them in your concerns. Talk about the headaches with your doctor. Do you have your own overnight pulse oximeter to evaluate Oxygen levels each night or just use one from the doctor or DME?

Do you go right to sleep pretty much immediately when lights out? Or does it take a while?

Thanks Pugsy,

I'll have to exercise some patience.
I do have a follow up in about 30 days.
My Oximeter was provided by DME and turned in next day.

I guess Complex Apnea will take some time to correct...

Yes, it does.
Actually plain OSA also takes some time also. Those people who you read about that have the overnight miracle...they are in the minority. I turn pea green with envy every time I read one of those stories.
Your situation is much more complicated and again...some lucky people feel great right from the start but more people find that it takes some time.

Now if you need reassurance that Oxygen levels are good while you are being patient, did you know that you can get a recording pulse oximeter that you can use and have access to software and check your own oxygen levels whenever you feel like it? I got the CMS 50DPlus because it was cheap and I knew I was only going to do it randomly..and I was right..checked it once...boring. Just have to be careful to make sure that what you get records overnight and isn't just for spot checking while awake. Not horribly expensive either. Similar models on EBay from China for a little less but I went ahead and bought mine from Kevin at this store because he offers such good support for software issues. It was worth the little extra to me.
