The USA does not want those 'foreigners' telling them what to do even if it is a good idea.

ICD-10 has been around since 1992 and has been widely adopted by many national public health systems. The real question is why its taken the US healthcare system 20+ years to get to the point of implementing ICD-10

Thank you. It is good to learn my fellow citizens did not come up with this idiocy!

I'm not joking.

ICD-9 in the US is quite simply a mess. It has codes in the wrong places (because the right places have run out of space), many other issues related to capturing adequate clinical detail, and being able to cope with newly arising types of injuries/diseases/conditions/presentations - all of which are are only sustainable by very expensive workarounds

We couldn't get used to the metric system either.

Thank you Lugus, you ate absolutely correct. I'm not saying ICD-10 will fix everything, but it is much more specific and will drastically cut down on those 100s of codes they had to choose from. Training is going to be a hugh expense but it is all left up to the orginization as to how and when they train. My company is currently training employees in batches. I have yet to train, but have a date set. Also, not all Drs or billing specialists will know the codes. I am a medical coder, so you just have to get in touch with the correct person.

Billbolton is absolutely correct. The codes are updated once a year. Someone didn't just decide to put codes in there about turkeys and ducks, this actually had to happen to someone and the coder had to use an unknown code, so it was added the next year. ICD-10 is nothing like ICD-9 so it is meant to much much better.

Lugus, you got that right. All of this isn't meant to harm anyone. Change can be a good thing. Before I graduated college my Professor told us that "If you don't like change, this isn't the right field for you." She was so right.
