Mask headgear is much looser in AM

Post by porete » Thu Apr 25, 2013 8:27 pm

My Dad has been mentioning to me that his headgear and mask are much looser as it gets closer to morning; therefore he has leaks that wake him up. When he adjusts his mask to go to sleep, the mask and headgear fit just right. He is wondering if this could be related to swelling in his face that dissipates as the night goes on, or something else. His face doesn't really look swollen when he goes to bed, so I'm not really sure about what is causing this phenomenon. Any suggestions or ideas would be great.

Facial skin oils most likely causing thing to slide around a bit on the face. They tend to accumulate more in the wee hours of the morning.
Maybe a little mask liner to help absorb some of them so things won't be quite so slippery?
Our facial structure also tends to relax more when asleep. Muscles less tense and all that.

Thank you, Pugsy, that makes a lot of sense. We'll see what we can do to remedy the situation.

Which mask?

How often does he wash his headgear?
New headgear?......older headgear?
Perspiration/sweat can cause stretching. Then, drying (like during the day) will shrink it back up again......until during the night when it starts to stretch out again. This can happen whether it's been washed or just from normal use.

Sometimes in these cases it needs to be taken up about a quarter of an inch on each side.

Headgear is abt 1.5 weeks old, so I have not washed it for him yet. It fits him just right at the moment, I think if he pulled it any tighter, it would be too tight and cause more leaks.

I find I tend to tense up my face to make my face fit the mask. Then when I go to sleep, I relax and can get leaks. I had to train myself to relax my face and try to make the mask leak when I was adjusting the mask so it would stay tight after I fell asleep.

The mask or headgear also might shift up or down as well.

What mask does he use?

Does he use ramp? If so, try without it.
