The world is too PC these days. One night get up with mask and hoses on adn look in the mirror. Its funny !! and scary to the lil ones. I was shocked how many people I knew were using cpaps w/o telling anyone. They need exposure good or bad to erase the stigma.

Hey, I'm not a Leno fan, but even catching a glimpse of myself in the mirror inspires a response.....either to laugh or to cry.........I laugh.......or I really would cry..

Blasted storm again......must be....computer's gettin' squirrelly again......keeps wiping out parts of what I wrote......Grrrrrrrrrrr...

The only thing that concerns me about this is the number of posts from people worrying about wearing the masks and about having future partners. A comment like that could put somebody off of cpap forever.

I thought it was funny too, but there are too many people trying to adjust and something like that may push them over the edge.

I'm not saying it was appropriate for Leno to make a joke out of it, I'm just saying I can see the humor in myself being glimpsed by myself......It's all about self esteem.......Something I lacked at the beginning of this journey. Just being able to laugh at it is an important step for me, as when all is said and done, I'm the one I have to live with......And no, I'm not being complacent, having a supportive 'other' in my life.......to the contrary......I am very much alone.......but comfortable with myself. Having a guy of my own would be absolutely wonderful.......but highly unlikely......

btw, by just looking at Jay Leno's long chin, one can easily tell that he's a lunky fellow who doesn't or won't have osa!

I can understand why Jay Leno may have said what he did. I'm completely up front with friends and work colleagues about my CPAP treatment and do not try to hide the fact that I need CPAP and where a mask at night. When having to travel out and stay in a hotel I always keep my CPAP close by and not leave it in the car or hotel where it could be damaged or stolen knowing full well I need to use it that night, so when work colleagues ask me what's in the bag, I shown them.

I've received some funny comments and jokes about the nasal/full face mask and having to wear it at night, comments about it being used for a bizarre sex ritual to other wide and wonderful things.

However, as soon as you turn around to them (certainly in my case) and state due to high blood pressure and large heart palpitations, if I were not to use CPAP, I'd eventually have a heart attack and keel over, they go all serious and then understand that it's not just for fun, it's actually to keep me alive and to hopefully live a longer life than I would without it.

It's far too easy in life to mock and joke about things you don't understand.

I took the time to write just now to Jay Leno about "redeeming" himself from some comments that have made some members of this talk site for OSA a little perturbed by having Mike Moran on his show. I mentioned his book and how unique and talented he is and how this would be a great way to make up for what he said that has offended not only the percentage of people on this site, but I'm sure others who don't post here, too, throughout the country.

I will keep you posted if he/his staff writes back. I even gave my home phone number and said they can contact me via phone or email. Let's all keep our fingers crossed that Mike can get on the show and show the world just what he's made of, while restoring the dignity of all of us who wear our masks nightly.

Again, I will repeat, I don't find it offensive and think you have to be able to laugh at yourself to get through this life, but it's a great way to get Mike on the show. I'm keeping my fingers crosssed (at the risk of cramps and not being able to type that easily). Will keep you all informed if I hear anything.

and we can disagree with Leno on what basis?

I agree with the "gotta laugh" approach.

Only a few bars you could walk into and get singled out as the Hot Catch for wearing a CPAP mask into the place...........

I didn't find this headline offensive. Leno makes fun of a lot of things in his monologue and then says, "Don't write me letters, it was just a joke". Yes, the masks look funny. But I don't agree that all publicity, positive or negative, is a good thing. Some people don't do anything about their condition even when they expect they have SA because they know they can't live with wearing a mask. This doesn't help, which is why I mentioned educating Jay Leno. I think having Mike Moran as a guest promoting his book would be a good thing, and fitting method for an entertainment show.
