How to deal with super humid climate

Post by MrPresident » Mon Apr 08, 2013 5:09 pm

I think my wife and I will soon have firm offers for jobs in Bermuda. Sweet!
But I was reading a "expat in Bermuda" blog and on the blog was a "10 things you need to know before you move to Bermuda" post. In that post he makes much of how green mold grows everywhere because of the humidity. This is exacerbated by the fact that most of their water is from rain running off the roof in your basement which is actually a water tank. This guy has had clothes, shoes and furniture ruined by mold.

90% humidity in a house sitting on a water tank. Mmmmm........

So I am freaked out about my hose being moldy inside all the time if we go. Has anyone ever dealt with extreme humidity? Best way to keep a clean hose?

When you live in the tropics, you need to get into the habit of owning less and cleaning what you do own every few days... its a lifestyle thing

It you are going to freak about mold, then you should wash it out and dry it in the sun everyday. In my experience you'd probably be OK if you do it once a week, but it's your call

Cheers,

Bill

Easy ... just sell your humidifier, you won't need it.

I have already trained myself to use my CPAP without humidification and I'm over 200 miles from any coast.

I live inland also and don't use a humidifier. Make sure the CPAP air intake does not have an air conditioner vent blowing on it.

Never wash the hose - difficult to dry out. I use a hose for years without cleaning. The only thing that goes through it is filtered air.

I certainly would not hang a hose outside where plant pollen and insect poop can get in it.

Or buy one of those machines that controls the humidity level. Off the top of my head.... I can't think of it.

I bought a couple of room dehumidifiers when I was living in a humid climate. Here is what they do for you:

1. Overnight they collect a big pan of water which is an ideal place for mold to grown.

2. They add heat to the room which also helps mold grow.

I mad a bad purchase and they weren't cheap.

If someone has a different experience with dehumidifiers, state it.

I figured I would not need a humidifier. But I thought that cleaning your hose was important. I've been feeling guilty because I only clean mine once a week.

Thanks for the input.

I lived on Guam for almost 4 years.... I had a pretty decent sized dehumdifier that ran 24 hours a day....

Mine had a 2 1/2 gallon tank that collected the water...that got emptied every other day... once a week, it got cleaned with a 1/3 bleach / 2/3 water solution.... never had any issues with mold in the tank.

Every month or so, I washed the dust and junk off the coils of the dehumidifier.

The dehumidifier kept the mold away from my clothes, etc.. and made my overall life much more pleasurable...

I've not cleaned mine since I got it ... if I did, it would probably get dirty.

So if it ain't dirty, you shouldn't be messing around cleaning it.

If it gets mold in it ... you will smell it. At that point, just replace it.

At one point I had so many extra hoses I gave them away. The two I have now have never needed cleaning.

I'm all about not cleaning my hose. Sometimes I go a couple of weeks or three without cleaning it and I can never tell a difference anyway.

I suppose it goes without saying that the heated hose is not necessary either, which is fine by me.

Nice avatar to you too DreamStalker. Several nice avatars on this thread. It feels like 1970 all over again. I think I'll have sitar music as background to my dreams tonight.
