Hi
I have a set of resmed nasal pillows and a phillips system 1 APAP, with humidifier and heated tube. I use nasonex when required.
About a couple of weeks ago I caught a cold / man flu thing, and while that is over thankfully, no throat is still quite sensitive. Everytime I put my APAP machine on and the air hits the back of my throat I have a coughing fit. It is now at the point that I am having real trouble getting to sleep with the APAP going.
I have tried cough medicine for a dry cough (robutussan) and sipped lots of water, but to no avail. I even tried faffing about with my humidifier settings, but no luck.
Any suggestions out there in cpaptalk land?
thanks, caprica

Re: coughing and CPAP
Are you taking any blood pressure medication? Specifically, Lisinopril?
That one in particular can produce a dry cough for many who take it. I can speak from experience (eight years ago).

Re: coughing and CPAP
Are you breathing through your mouth or nose when the coughing happens? Whichever it is, maybe a mask that brings air in another route would help temporarily. I have reactive airways and after a cold the cough is ever present with little to no provocation. Hopefully yours will settle down soon.
Oh, and I had the same experience as Den with Lisinopril. So did my mother. Felt like a feather tickling just over my tonsil.

						Re: coughing and CPAP
I have been taking quinapril for years. even though coughing is a potential side effect for quinapril, I have never had a cough as a side effect in the past.
I guess I just have to be patient and wait for the post flu tickle in my throat to subside. If it does not go away, I will probably have to go back to my doc again.
