new machine whistling

Post by BrianCD » Wed Apr 03, 2013 9:19 pm

I used my new PR DS560 last night on Auto pap mode. This was the first night. I could not sleep at all, not because of breathing problems, but because my wife kept waking me up every few minutes telling me the machine was making a whistling noise.

From what I could tell the whistling is definitely coming from inside the machine, however she says it is coming from my Swift FX mask. The whistling is a very low pitch whistle that coincides with inhaling. I have had the mask for about a week and not had any whistling problems until I started using the new machine.

Looking at my history for last night, my average pressure was 13.4 and it went up to 18.2. It looks like I spent most of the time around 15 - 18 with my 90% at 16.4.

My old Cpap was originally prescribed at 9.0 and I have been running it at 11.0 for the last 5 years.

Is there anything I can do about the whistling? Is the whistling due to the high pressure, or something else?

Try playing with the different Flex option settings to see if the noise diminishes with a change in Flex setting.
If not using it...turn it on...if using it try a different setting.
Not sure if you have a choice between AFLex and CFlex in apap mode but if you do...try both.
There's a demo available in the Flex menu for the different settings.

The PR S1 machines seem to have a little noise on inhale...the S9 machines have a little noise on exhale.
Never heard the PR S1 noise described as a whistle though.

Are you using both a foam filter and the white fine filter? Make sure they are seated properly. If no white fine filter..get one.

If you cannot get the noise down to a level that doesn't disturb you or your wife's sleep...take it back to DME and tell them that something is not right.

A little machine noise we expect but not so much noise that it keeps us awake. That's excessive noise and not acceptable.

I just recently got one of these. They set it up for me and showed me how to use it. Right away we could tell there was a high pitched whistling sound. They immediately swapped it out for a different new machine, same model. The new one did not have this problem. Not sure what it was, but if it is new, they should just swap it out for you. Good luck.

I tried adjusting the settings last night with no success. It is now whistling when I inhale and exhale. It seems to only happen at higher pressures, maybe around 13 and higher.

I called cpap.com who I got it from on Tuesday morning and they said I could ship it back to them which would take a day, then 3-4 days to test it and another day to ship back. I am not crazy at all about going almost a week without. My old machine stopped working completely the day before my new one arrived, so it is most likely not an option either. Am I going to have to buy a travel model or something to get me by?

Any other suggestions?

Call CPAP.COM and tell them you have no backup. I recall that they do have a loaner program for such issues.

A few things you might want to look at (all seals):
- The seal between the humidifier and the machine
- The seal between the humidifier and the output
- The seal where the host connects.

You could try simply disassembling and then re-assembling the unit. You could also try bypassing the humidifier altogether (though you'd need a different host), just to see if the whistling occurs within the machine for the connection to, in or after the humidifier.

Good luck! (that really sucks, btw)

Are you using a regular diameter hose? I didn't have any trouble till I switched to the small hose.
