Windpipe Stent??
Windpipe Stent??
Having a discussion with a friend that had recently had some heart problems, we got on to health in general and he asked if my OSA was cured yet, I laughed. Further on to the discussion we both wondered if it would be possible to have a stent fitted in the part of the windpipe that collapses cause the OSA. Anyone heard of this, is it a possible 'fix'
Just interested in what you guys think/know.

You could use a length of 1 inch pipe, but then you wouldnt be able to nod yes about anything. Jim

Yes - I too have been thinking that for years.
The Pillar procedure might be considered a very crude from or this.
The problems with nerves (e.g. gag reflex) - need for cleaning by villi and mucus - well there are some problems.
Right now I am taking "the other route". I am eating Kimchi - good bugs - oh yea. Seems to reduce inflammation.
I do not think that the pressure of CPAP pushes the tissue aside to splint the airway, I think the high pressure area in the airway makes it easier for the blood and other fluids to be elseware in the body so the tissues shrink. Over the years I have found that things that reduce inflammation reduce AHI.
Keep thinking!!
Todzo

I honestly don't think they are too far away from it. With 3D printing and the ability to grow new organs from the patient's own cells, they could use the 3D printing to make a flexible 'cage' with the patient's own tissue. Science just needs to connect the dots.

Re: Windpipe Stent??
I have actually pondered this myself. I guess if it was doable, somebody would have done it by now. But I agree with quietmorning, Science never stops and there is hope for such a concept yet, I am sure.

I wonder if a tracheostomy would work

What makes you think that it's caused by a "windpipe collapse"?NJDav wrote:Having a discussion with a friend that had recently had some heart problems, we got on to health in general and he asked if my OSA was cured yet, I laughed. It could very well be that the problem is in the nasal passages (enlarged turbinates and/or deviated septum) and you can't breathe through you nose.......then, when you try to breathe through your mouth, your tongue falls back into your throat and restricts/obstructs your air intake.
Then there's the other possibility of Central Sleep Apnea.......which is essentially a neurological problem.
Too many generalizations about this condition and therapies.

Goofproof forgot about flexible pipe - you can nod "Yes".
What you are speaking of is already available and used in a few cases.

Re: Windpipe Stent??
A nose cured of septal deviation or other problems will not cure apnea, which is the blockage of your airway by tissue that's collapsed in that area for various reasons, both anatomic and/or failure of neurological impulses (as in central apnea). Your snoring might be cured by that surgery, but not apnea.

In general I think the idea looks to much at the symptom and so looses sight of the systems involved.
I know that if they laugh at your idea it is likely good. What it means when they toss gross pictures at is I do not know - but - shame on them for that.

Coincidentally, the man has an eye injury. He is one of the few using a nasal trumpet that would agree to have his photograph used.Todzo wrote: What it means when they toss gross pictures at is I do not know - but - shame on them for that.
I don't think it is usual for you to call people with injuries and disabilities "gross".

Re: Windpipe Stent??
Considering all the laughing and persecution as well as the fact that technology can likely get past the problems perhaps it is a good idea indeed.
