I tried my first machine last night. It is too noisy to be usable. It is NOT noise from the mask. The noise that is bothersome is coming from the motor. It is bad enough on a volume baisis but, it revs up and down as I inhale and exhale. It sounds like someone revving a car engine outside my window. My wife was not able to sleep either, due to the noise. She said it was much noisier than my snoring. I gave up after a couple of hours. The unit I took home for my study was super quite. I was able to sleep through the night with it first try.
Is this RESMED normally a noisy unit?
Could I have a bad one?
Which units are quieter?
I would be happy with a normal CPAP if it was quiet. This multi pressure thing is more annoying than the problem it is supposed to fix. . I am extremely frustrated.
RESMED S8 Autoset Vantage is noisy?
S8
I have a new S8 AutoSet Vantage/H3i combo, and I find it to be extremely quiet. I can't hear the motor at all, and the only sound I do hear is a slight gurgling sound when I exhale, from the air moving through the spiral channels of the humidifier.
In this one regard, the S8 is slightly noisier than the Fisher&Paykel HC608 CPAP that I replaced with the S8, in order to get AutoSet. The F&P is a GREAT CPAP that is whisper quiet and has THE BEST humidification system (including a heated hose) that I know of. But alas, no APAP. (One is supposed to in the pipe).
Anyhow, I am sleeping better, with fewer awakenings and longer compliance with the S8, and I feel more alert during the day.
If yours is SO NOISY that you feel that you can't use it, I'd return it and try another one, since mine is extremely quiet except for the gurgle.
Best of luck to you!

We have had many discussion here on this issue of noisy machines.
Some just seem to be noisy while another identical machine may not be.
Also, it does seem to have a lot to do with the exact settings one has and the environment.
I had the following experience that proved to me just how odd this noise problem can be ...
1) Used an S7 Elite CPAP & found it very quiet & no issue - wife accepted it
2) Shortly thereafter I tried an S7 Spirit AUTO & immediately found it made a 'whining up & down noise' - wife went & slept in the spare bedroom
3) Being an engineer & knowing these models very well from having disected them, I swapped the entire blower assembly from the Spirit to the Elite. BUT!, when I used the two machines subsequently the Elite (cpap) was acceptably quiet & the Spirit (AUTO) was just as whinney. Go figure
Advice
Try taking the machine back - if you insist it is unuseable I am sure they will swap it.
Good luck

xPAP and Quattro std mask (plus a pad-a-cheek anti-leak strap)
It is going back
I spoke to the respiratory therapist today. She will see me late next week, I don't know why the wait. The Doc told me to get on the CPAP or expect a very short life. I would think I could stop by for a half an hour to straighten this out. I think it will work out ok though. At any rate, that machine is staying with her. I think it is just a "lemon". I have done a fair amount of research today. That unit is supposed to be pretty quiet.
