Switched To Swift LT Nasal Pillows - Not Good Results

Post by dangerousdave » Tue Mar 12, 2013 3:15 am

I've been waking up after about 4 hours while using my full mask of 6 months. My doctors office specialist said to try something else and prescribed a nasal pillow. I've tried it for two nights and it has been terrible. I have woken up after only a few hours with the air blasting through the tube. I look at the Res Med air settings and it shows 10.5, my preset range is 5-15. Starting off each night seemed fine with no problems and no obvious increase in air pressure. I've confirmed that my positioning markers on the pillows and headgear match so I'm sure I have them turned the correct way. I was prescribed the medium pillow and that's what I'm using. Also the pillow hurts the area of my nose that it touches which after continued used I "guess" will not hurt any more.

Obviously I need this to work however, I'm prepared to go back to my full mask. The problem with that now is that the seal is almost 7 months old and I'm sure doesn't seal as tight as it should. Also, it now emits a very high pitched whistling which is very annoying. The sound doesn't appear to be coming from the seal though.

So, I've got to find a solution soon, as I will have a partner in bed with me and I obviously need to resolve this before then.

I use the swift lt for her and love it. I don't know what your problem my be but maybe the pillow size is not right esp if it hurts your nose. It should not hurt anything. Also the mask needs to be kept looser than many. I would make sure I am adjusting it right when putting on and maybe try another sized nasal pillow. Good luck!

The most common cause of pain with the nasal pillows is the straps are simply too tight...
The second most common cause is the nasal pillow size...try a different size.

At the most a properly fitted nasal pillow mask will only cause very minor tenderness at the nostril area. This area is pretty much virgin territory since it has never really had anything touching it. Get some Lansinoh lanolin ointment to apply to the nostril area. Liberally during the day and a little at night. It will help the discomfort and help heal any minor abrasions (which shouldn't be there if mask is fitted properly). It's found in the baby aisle of most stores....this is what nursing mom's use to help with nipple soreness.

The Swift LT has that little angle thingy...play with it a bit to see if a little different angle offers some relief.
There's a video here helping with the fitting..have you see it?

The blast of air in the middle of the night? Where are you feeling that?
Have you checked your software reports to see if you are mouth breathing excessively?

As others have pointed out, the first few days, it might be a little sore.

If it's hurting, something is wrong with the fit or straps. In particular, the straps should not be pulling the mask "up" into your nose, but rather just be a little snug. Their job is to keep the pillows where they are, not seal them into your nose with pull.

Take a look at the Swift fitting tips in my signature below.

Most common newbie mistake is wearing them too tight or trying to cram them IN your nose.

How old are your nasal pillows? I recently started using the Swift LT & love it, however the pillows don't last as long as with other nasal pillow masks I've tried. My LT pillows don't last as long as the FX pillows do, I don't know why. I can tell when the LT pillows are done with. You might try changing the pillows to make sure you have a fresh pair. And try all the suggestions from the posters above.

Good luck,
Jen
