question about brining my cpap on board an airplain.

Post by jabman » Mon Mar 04, 2013 2:28 pm

I am flying to Calaforina next week. It will be my firsttime flying. I know I can bring my cpap onboard with me but I would like to store otherthings in the cpap bag like mt meeter and other medications. Do you think this will be a problem?

I took mine on a domestic flight in Australia with no problems. I treated it like my handbag. It went in the overhead luggage space and was fine. I found that as long as it met the size requirements there were no problems. If you can carry meds in a handbag you should be able to carry them in a cpap bag. I'm in Australia though so rules about meds may be different.

I think adding items to your CPAP bag may cause problems. You are allowed 1 carry on and medical equipment. If you stash additional items in the medical equipment bag you may be charged and/or delayed.

I travel about 3 times a year. My meds go in my cpap bag with no problem. I put my humidifier and cpap unit each in a separate zip lock bag. For the last two years no one has removed them from the bags. One time I carried a special bottle with distilled water in it and it caused a problem. So I now put it in my carry on bags.

Like LSAT said - I'm under the impression that if you want to claim this as a medical carry on in addition to a regular carry on then it can only contain your CPAP setup. But if you just want to claim the one carry on then you can do anything you want. Do a search. You'll find many many threads about this.

I think your best bet is to get a letter from your doctor about your CPAP and hand luggage and take another small bag on the plane since you will be allowed 2 bags

Medications should be fine, but you can't put your lunch in your CPAP bag. I put my meds in one ziploc and as bobby269 said, each component goes in a separate ziploc. I'm not sure what a "mt meeter" is, so I can't comment on it. When going through security, I put the components in a separate bin and point it out to the screener as I am waiting to go through, I haven't been asked to take them out of the ziplocs, but they could. They are seeing more of them so it's not too much of an issue. I've flown about 6 times since last summer with my cpap.

So should I put my mask in a ziplok bag as well?
Sorry for the typo I ment my blood glucose meter.

You should have no problem. Don't worry about it. I put my meds in a back pack I take with me, just because I do, it's convenient. TSA personnel generally see many brand name CPAP bags coming through X-Ray, not one has asked me ever to open/take out the contents, not one has mentioned anything to me other than once I left it behind and started walking away... "Hey, Sir! Is this yours?" (DOH slaps forehead)

I personally put all components, (mask, hose etc.) in ziploc bags, I figure that way they can see what it is and no need to touch it. But that's just my preference. And yes, yes you should be good with putting your blood glucose meter in there as well,

I always put each component of my CPAP equipment and machine in separate ziploc bags - even the power brick.

My CPAP bag includes an extension cord, mask cleaning wipes, extra nasal pillow, silicone tape, earplugs etc.

I usually carry my meds in a separate insulated soft cooler as I use injectables, but see no reason they couldn't go in the CPAP bag if they fit. I usually have the cooler wiped by TSA because of the freezer gel pak.

I've never had an issue with TSA or the airlines, except on one flight with Delta and they wanted to deny me the cooler with the meds, so I stuffed it in my CPAP bag.

Cheers,
xena

Anything medical should be "carry-on", regardless of which bag it's in.
If they lose your spare clothes, or toiletries, no biggie; just don't give then a chance to lose or destroy something you NEED.

I travel a lot, all over the world and with many different airlines (I'm travelling four time this month alone, to the UK twice, Italy once and Malta once!). I have never had a problem, as long as I email/ring the airline in advance and tell them about the CPAP. This way they will gtive you a letter or put something in your booking approving you to carry extra handluggage for medical equipment. Once the official approval is there, I would carry anything that is CPAP related, including extension cords etc in that one bag. I have never had any problems anywhere - let's face it, the airline staff don't know a CPAP from anything else, so aren't really in a position to query anything in the bag. In all of my many travels, I've only once been asked by airline staff to see the inside of the bag. The security personell often ask to see it and also often take a swob for drugs/explosives, but they don't care what items in what bag, as long as it's all legal!
