Resmed S9 AHI affected by bathroom breaks?
I get up once in the night to use the bathroom and have been checking my AHI before going and then in the morning when I get up. I have found a huge difference in the figures. In the middle of the night it's almost 1/2 of the morning AHI. Does the S9 raise the AHI because I've disconnected the mask and let it turn itself off when I get up in the night and again in the morning?

The breaks, with the machine left running until it turns itself off, will slightly affect your leak numbers, but should not affect your AHI at all.
It's possible that you're experiencing more REM sleep during the hours after the break than before. Many people experience their highest AHIs during RE

Bathroom breaks aren't going to affect the AHI except for maybe when you go back to bed if you happen to lay there for a little while awake and the machine may flag awake breathing irregularities and those "awake" events may inflate the AHI.
How much of a difference are we talking about? What's the AHI before the bathroom break and what's the AHI after the bathroom break? Also how many hours of sleep before the break and after? Also what is the event category breakdown for the after the break session? Look at the software reports. Are the events clustered anywhere?

I check my S9 every night before my BR break, so I realize that most of my apneas are between 3-5AM, but it is not a huge difference. How much does your AHI increase?

No. The AHI number in the morning is the average of all the events during the night. At your break you may have had only 1 event and slept 2 hours so your AHI will be .5 then. If, after you've gone to bed for another 4 hours and have 11 events your AHI will then be 2, 12 events over 6 hours. Apnea events very, very, seldom occur evenly scattered throughout the night.thumperbill wrote:I get up once in the night to use the bathroom and have been checking my AHI before going and then in the morning when I get up. Re: Resmed S9 AHI affected by bathroom breaks?
I've only had the S9 for a couple of weeks and am new to the SleepyHead app. Sorry for any confusion.
At 3 am the AHI was 0.8 after 3.5 hours sleep and when I got up in the morning at 7:45 am it was 4.59. I know part of it is because I tried laying on my side at one point and had a problem with blockage but I don't think that was very long and I switched to laying on my back again. I know that after the bathroom break each night I always wake many times until I force myself to get up.
I apparently had 2 CA events before the break and then 22 after. H was 3 after the break. OA was 4 before the break and 6 after.
The CA is all over the place from an hour apart for some to 9 events in a 35 minute period starting at 5:55 am then 5 events over 9 minutes starting at 7:38 am before I forced myself up at 7:45.

The CAs are elevating your AHI after the bathroom break and probably the bulk of them are related to "wake many times until I get up". The machine doesn't know if you are awake or asleep and can often flag awake irregular breathing as some sort of apnea event.thumperbill wrote: after the bathroom break each night I always wake many times until I force myself to get up.
It just senses air flow...that's all it does. Calls it like it sees it but because it doesn't have the ability to know if you were asleep or not sometimes awake breathing gets flagged.

Concerning yourself about an AHI less than 5 is not needed
I don't have sleep apnea, and my AHI would be close to 5.
It's completely normal to have a few events.
Are the central apneas apparent most nights? Under 5 an hour is normal. I note you had them higher than this - is this every night?

Re: Resmed S9 AHI affected by bathroom breaks?
The Clear Airway Apnea events are very high after the bathroom visit.
Feb. 28 2 before the trip and 22 after with some only a minute apart
Feb. 27 1 before the trip and 18 after
Feb. 26 2 before and 26 after averaging one every couple of minutes
Feb. 24 1 before and only 6 after
Feb. 23 none before and 14 events after over 4 1/2 hours
Feb. 22 16 events after for 5 1/2 hours
I will try to take a melatonin tab when I wake for the bathroom tonight to see if it helps put me right back to sleep.
This is so tiring.
