Feel like I got beat in the chest with a bat...

Post by bucksbeek » Thu Feb 21, 2013 9:20 am

So I've been on therapy for 2 months and still having a lot of soreness in my chest muscles. The last two days have felt like I got beat with a bat. I was under the impression that it wasn't supposed to last more than a couple weeks and was supposed to get better, not worse. I can barely move certain ways today as it is very tender. It seems to be more prominent on the right side (the side I sleep on). Its still sore if I sit still but more so upon exhaling. What is going on??

What are your pressure settings?
Are you using EPR..if so at what setting?

2 months is a little long for this symptom to persist.

Sometimes the pain comes and goes. In my first few weeks I had pain that I think was probably in the intercostal cartelages that connect the rib bones together and allow the rib cage to expand and contract. But it went away, then came back a couple months later, then went away and hasn't returned.

My auto is set from 5-15. And epr is set to "patient" (whatever that means) but it looks like its always at 2.

EPR set to "patient" just means that it is set you so can change EPR if you want to.

Have you looked at your reports to see where your pressures are going? Like it is spending much time up in the range above 10?
EPR set at 2 reduces the pressure upon exhale to 2 cm below whatever the machine is delivering..if you are spending much time up above 10...say at 12..that means on inhale you are exhaling against 10 cm..which isn't horribly high but it does take a bit of "work" by the chest muscles.

Might try setting EPR at 3 to see if that helps a little more.
Might want to mention it to your doctor...keep him in the loop.

You might want to have that checked by your doctor. While I sometimes have that sensation when I've had some aerophagia.
I also had a bout of pericarditis (inflammation around heart) that began as pain when exhaling, when it started I thought it was the beginnings of upper respiratory infection or pneumonia but waited to see if it got worse. Well long story short, it did, thought it was a heart attack, ER, Ambulance, angiogram, and a hospital stay later, pericarditis which was kind of like winning the lottery compared to the other possibilities.

I agree with CF above. Chest pains can be problematic of so many things. It's best to play it safe and get it checked out by your doctor. If you are older, fairly inactive or have other underlying medical problems this is doubly important.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Don't forget that CPAPers can still have the same medical problems that non-apneacs have.

Don't neglect to consider the possibility that your problems are unrelated to CPAP and apnea. Or that they are something like a heart problem related to apnea.

Us CPAP patients and our doctors sometimes tend to see everything through "CPAP goggles" and blame everything on CPAP and ignore symptoms of other serious medical problems.

Thanks everyone! I actually took a night off from cpap and woke up this morning with no pain or tenderness. I can move around again. So either its a big coincidence, or the soreness has to with my therapy. I turned up the epr to 3 as Pugsy suggested and will try it tonight. If the soreness comes back right away then I guess I'll be calling the Dr. Thanks for the concern and suggestions.
