Husband New To CPAP

Post by tess47 » Mon May 15, 2006 12:33 am

Scouring the internet for a comfortable mask - have just tried a
Respironics gel nasal mask - no go! I think the nasal pillow systems
look the most tolerable myself - any advice for a 50's man with a mustache? He's so tired - got to find something that works!

Aeiomed Headrest (used to be called the "Aura" and still is called that on the message boards) - comes with both Medium and Large nasal pillows.

Respironics ComfortLite 2 with nasal pillows (get Medium and Large) and the "simple cushion" (get Medium and Large).

Those first two are my favorites.

ResMed Swift - comes with Small, Medium, and Large nasal pillows. Deservedly well liked by many. Has nothing in front of the eyes.

Puritan Bennett Breeze with nasal pillows - get Large and Extra Large unless he has a very small nose for a man. Skip the Breeze if he sleeps on his back any. Good for side sleeping, but not very good for sleeping on one's back. I happily used a Breeze for about a year until the Aura came out.

If you decide to try another nasal mask (covers the nose), get ResMed's Mirage Activa. This one seals so well that it should work fine even for a guy with a moustache. The straps are worn very loose.

It helped me when I realized that Superman & Batman are clean shaven.

I'm a forty-ish guy with a mustache, Swift is working mostly fine for me. As long as I trim the bushiness of the mustache down every week or so, the Swift doesn't get pushed out of the way in the middle of the night. Doesn't have to be a pencil thin mustache to work, just something less prominent than a Civil War soldier's facial decoration.

The Respironics CL2 is not something I've tried yet, but it's next up in queue for masks to investigate.

I am a 50ish new bee here.

Been using my autopap for two whole days.

I have a beard and mustach and am trying out the
comfortlite 2.

So far I have not died. I learned last night that I probably
have to keep my tongue on the top of my mouth.

So far I think it is helping

I ordered the Respironics CL2 for him. He's already thinned the mustache. He's worn it all of his adult life and doesn't want to do away with it completely if he doesn't have to. I'll let you know how the CL2 works....
and thanks for the advice.
